By choosing to implement an SMS, FS/HAAF is ensuring that the mgmt sys is focused on those enviro impacts that threaten mission priorities b/c Sust balances mission with well-being and environment (instead of this just being an enviro thing) The recently released Army Environmental Strategy says we will use EMS to integrate sustainability into all activities FS/HAAF began working through the EMS/ISO 14001 planning process a year ago, and is now taking advantage of the opportunity to integrate Sustainability and EMS The SMS can enhance Mission performance by: Aligning mission and environmental goals Ensuring the viability of training areas Promoting sustainable operations Reducing environmental liability Reducing operational costs Promoting continual improvement DA directed that installation EMSs be mission-focused. 53. FS/HAAFs Significant Environmental Aspect FS/HAAF has determined the significant environmental impacts to be those caused by land use. These impacts can be both positive and negative. Land use includes: Training Lands Scheduling Conflicts Using Stream Crossings Improperly, or Not At All Tank Exercises Timber Harvesting Communications Towers Destruction or Improvement of Threatened & Endangered Species Habitat Airspace Conflicts Infantry Training Master Planning Prescribed Burning Aircraft Training Construction of Buildings, Tank Trails, Ranges Solid Waste Disposal Recyling Again, FS/HAAFs Sustainability Management System is designed to systematically, intensively, and corporately manage environmental impacts that threaten mission priorities, and soldier, family member & community well-being. 54. SMS Initial Focus Area 1 For the initial implementation phase, the SMS is focused on two areas of FS/HAAF operations that are tied to land use. The first is those activities relating to Threatened & Endangered Species Management. Environmental & Mission Benefits of Improved Personal Performance: Reducing the impacts of our activities, along with effective TES Management, results in healthy, native ecosystems and robust populations, thereby having a positive impact on land use at FS/HAAF. As we minimize our impacts and benefit the environment, the landscape is also improved for training and training restrictions are reduced. REDUCE IMPACTS TO ENDANGERED SPECIES BY: Avoiding damage to wildlife habitats, wetlands and cultural/historical resources Using stream crossings, and using them properly Restricting activity in and near Endangered Species sites Using tank trails Reporting spills Call 911 in Garrison, or Range Control in the field For the initial implementation phase, the SMS is focused on two areas of FS/HAAF operations that are tied to land use. 55. SMS Initial Focus Area 2 For the initial implementation phase, the SMS is focused on two areas of FS/HAAF operations that are tied to land use. The second is those operations involving Solid Waste Management, which is pretty much everybody. Environmental & Mission Benefits of Improved Personal Performance: We all need to do our part in reducing the amount of solid waste generated and disposed. This will increase the life of the landfill, having a positive impact on FS/HAAF land use, while also freeing up resources for training. REDUCE SOLID WASTE GENERATION & DISPOSAL BY: Reducing waste: food scraps, cardboard, containers, etc. Using biodegradable products Properly containing and disposing of all waste Knowing what materials FS/HAAF recycles: oil/off-spec fuels, used products, drained-empty containers, paper products, glass, metals, plastics-1s, 2s & 5s, cardboard Recycling!
