  1. Horror films are unsettling and are designed to panic and entertain the audiences at the same time. The editing is often slow at the beginning and will increase in speed throughout the film with many cuts to make the audience feel distressed and uneasy and builds dramatic tension for a jump scare. Horror films also use close shots to empathise character emotions as well as extreme wide shots to create isolation and distance from a character. Horror uses unique and unusual angles to create confusion and an unsettling feel with the audience. They generally use dark colours for the villain light or white colours for the innocent victims. Neutral colours are often used for fated to die and sub characters. For characters there is often a monster or evil creature or villain figure of some kind for example Freddy Kruger, pennywise and a victim which is often a normal human figure so the audience can relate to them. There is often use of lowkey lighting on the villain and high key on the innocent victim, there is always a general dark atmosphere, underexposed or filmed at night to create a dark, spooky atmosphere with use of shadows to add to this. The colours tend to be blacks, reds and brown and these connote to the possible danger, blood, or evilness. There is also the use of high pitch music which creates a sense of alarm for the audience, there is an emphasis on footsteps, doors creaking and animal’s noises and making the audience feeling as though they don’t know what’s around the corner creating the ideal atmosphere for a jump scare. The start of the film is normally balanced and peaceful then later in the film there may be a disruption to this peace and a climax then usually a return to peace at the end of the film. There is often a lot of use of special effects, blood and CGI and are often filmed in rural locations in areas such as graveyards, old churches, abandoned buildings, castles and dark woods. Props include weapons such as knives, axes, and chainsaws as well as supernatural features such as castles, graveyards, and haunted houses. This creates mystery and suspicion around the film. Thriller is built around the emotion of excitement. However, thrillers often also create emotions of anxiety, terror, and uncertainty amongst the audience. There is normally lots of plot twists The editing uses quick cuts to keep the audience guessing what they think will happen next and keep them watching using heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation, and anxiety. Romance films normally end with the two characters being happy ever after ending where the characters reunite and work out their issues and then spend the rest of their lives together. The second ending is where the characters do not get back together often due to one of them dyeing which often happens in tearjerker films or romantic dramas. Romance films often contains two main protagonists, most of the time the film the female and male character fall in love and the film is then based around the relationship. There Is often an antagonist as well who is trying to break up the main love interests in some way this role often differs widely by for example it could be the female leads father who dislikes the male character or a popular or jealous girl or boy who doesn’t want the couple to be together. Romance films often also contain the gay best friend who is normally best friends with the female lead. Often characters in a romance are young and in high school are the female lead may be in a stereotypically geeky friendship group whereas the male lead may be in a popular sporty friendship group. The location may be somewhere peaceful and rural such as lake, woodland, or coastal area or on the other hand a high school and around the local town as the main characters may be teenagers therefore this is a more appropriate setting for the film to take place in. Some romances may also take place in Cities such as New York or London where a young businessman and woman fall in love in the workplace. Flowers usually roses are uses as a prop conventionally in romance films because they often symbolize beauty and have connotations of love and affection, so they are often used to emphasize a romantic relationship between two characters. Close up shots are often used to emphasis significance and importance of moments in the narrative often these closeups are of the characters face or something they are holding to make the audience to notice them and the significance of it and gets them wondering what part it will play in the narrative. Long and extreme long shots are often used to show two characters together. There is also use of two shots to show the two-love interest together and to show their close relationship and the proximity between them. Montages are also used to showing the passing of time and the two love interests’ relationship growing. Shot reverse shot is also used to show a relationship between the two protagonist characters and their conversations together which show their relationship growing.
