Jaundice is a condition where the skin turns yellow due to excess levels of bilirubin. Read on to know more about its symptoms, causes, and treatment options.
Jaundice Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
Jaundice is a symptom that occurs when there is an excessive amount of bile in the bloodstream. It is caused by an imbalance between the liver and gallbladder. The liver produces bile which helps break down fats and other substances in the body. In the case of jaundice, the liver cannot produce enough bile, and thus, the level of bile increases in the bloodstream. This results in the skin turning yellow.
What Is Jaundice?
Jaundice is also known as icterus. It is characterized by yellow discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes. It is usually associated with high levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a pigment produced by the breakdown of red blood cells. Read more and let’s find out Jaundice Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
Jaundice occurs when the body produces too much bilirubin. Bilirubin is a pigment produced by the liver that helps protect against infection. When it builds up in the blood, it can turn the skin yellow.
Jaundice is caused by an imbalance between the production and removal of bile pigments. This results in excessive amounts of bilirubin being present in the bloodstream. In some cases, jaundice is caused by a blockage in the biliary tract (the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the intestines).
Jaundice Causes
What are the causes of Jaundice?
There are several different causes of jaundice. They include:
• Gallstones
• Liver failure
• Hepatitis
• Pancreatic cancer
• Biliary obstruction
• Drug overdose
• Hemolytic disorders
• Other medical conditions
The most common cause of jaundice is Gilbert's syndrome. This is an inherited disorder that affects the production of bile pigments.
The other most common cause of jaundice is hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is caused by a virus called the hepatitis A virus (HAV). HAV is spread through contaminated water and food. It usually causes mild symptoms such as stomach aches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and malaise. If left untreated, however, it can lead to severe complications such as jaundice.
Other causes include cirrhosis, pancreatitis, cancer, gallstones, kidney failure, or medications like certain antibiotics.
Jaundice occurs when there is too much bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a pigment produced by the liver as part of the process of breaking down red blood cells. It normally passes through the body without causing any harm. However, when the level of bilirubin becomes high enough, it can turn the skin yellow.
Jaundice Symptoms
What are the symptoms of jaundice?
There are several signs and symptoms of jaundice. These include dark urine, pale stools, clay-colored stool, yellowish eyes, yellow skin, and yellow palms and soles.
Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, itching, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, jaundice can lead to liver failure.
Diagnosed and Tests
How can we diagnose Jaundice?
Your Doctor will give you a bilirubin test, which measures the quantum of the substance in your blood, a complete blood count( CBC), and other liver tests. However, your position of bilirubin will be high, If you have Jaundice.

Your Doctor will ask you about your symptoms and medical history. They may also give you a physical test and order tests to check your liver. And they'll do further tests, including imaging tests to find out what caused it.
Treatment includes rest, fluids, and medications.
If jaundice occurs in newborn babies, it is called neonatal jaundice. Neonatal jaundice usually disappears within two weeks after birth. If jaundice does not disappear, it is called persistent jaundice. Persistent jaundice can cause serious complications such as brain damage, seizures, and even death.
Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes due to increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a waste product produced by red blood cells. The liver breaks down bilirubin into bile pigment, which is then carried to the gallbladder where it is stored until needed. When there is too much bilirubin in circulation, it causes the skin and whites of the eyes to turn yellow.
Prevention includes avoiding exposure to sunlight, eating foods rich in vitamin C, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep.
