What’s so special about Key Stage 3? • A fresh start in a new school • Being the youngest again • New interests outside the home • Greater awareness of friends and fashion • A longing for independence • Pushing at boundaries • The moody blues • Emerging as an adult • Passport to success at GCSEs and beyond

What is the school’s role in Key Stage 3? • To prepare pupils for the adult world • To give them the skills and the knowledge they need for lifelong learning • To introduce them to a wide range of subjects and studies • To make them even more independent and self-aware • To further their thinking and learning for themselves • To give them confidence to join in, ask questions, help others • To make them and you proud of them • To lay the foundations for success at GCSE and beyond

The Key Stage 3 Strategy is about: • Building on what has been achieved in primary • Getting off to a flying start in a new school • Exciting and interesting lessons • More pupils being able to do things for themselves • Rapid progress and higher standards • Extra support for pupils not living up to their potential • No-one bored, left out or left behind • Asking for the support of families in their child’s education

DCSF reports that • Students are successful when: • they are determined and focussed in their approach to work • prepared to work independently without direct supervision • resilient and do not become disheartened when faced with disappointment • have long term goals • displaying other talents and interests • readily seeking and receiving help from home • They have formed productive and effective learning partnerships’ with teachers based on mutual respect

What can you do to support your child? • Show an interest • Talk about the school day • Use the school diary/planner • Attend and contribute to parents meetings • Discuss homework tasks • Help them organise their time and paperwork • Make sure they attend regularly • Find them a quiet place to study • Know the particular focus of each school year

  10. Assessment for Learning • An ongoing spoken and written dialogue between teacher and student • Individual KS3 targets set for each subject • Target grades in exercise books • Formative comments on key pieces of work • Student planners

  13. Moodle • A virtual learning environment, which basically means a web based classroom in which every FCC student has their own individual area which can be accessed from anywhere that has an internet connection.

  14. Moodle • Teachers can create a variety of resources that can be accessed by students in school or at home. • Audio files opportunity • Provision for feedback for students via moodle • Currently working on parental access • Moodle also offers comprehensive monitoring of all activity
