  1. Chatham Water Damage Services Water damage in the home can start from trivial sources, which could have been easily averted. Preventing water damage in the home is important to prevent structural problems later on, such as rotten floorboards, weakened roofs, damage to furniture and other possessions, and possibly even molding. These problems can be avoided if we look at the Chatham water damage restoration services, which provide sources after damage in the home. Check these areas to stop a small problem and avoid a larger damage from happening later on.

  2. PREVENTING WATER DAMAGE INDOORS There are three main areas inside the home that would be possible areas where indoor water damage can start from, these are the kitchen, bathroom and basement, utility room or laundry room. Starting from the kitchen, check all appliances in the kitchen, especially those that use or employ water. Make sure that they are working properly and there are no clogging or small drips or leaks. Check all the pipes of your dishwasher and refrigerator. Make sure that all the connecting pipes where water flows has no leaks, drips, discolorations, warping and even damage from water to nearby furnishings. Check that there are no wet spots on the floor near these appliances. Check under the sink. Make sure that the pipes are properly connected. There are no leaks. Check that the drain is working properly and that there are no clogs. Damage can sometimes start from clogged drains overflowing and ruining your property and possessions. The bathroom is another area that can be checked periodically. Check the walls and floors for cracked or deteriorating caulk and grout. Replace these immediately. Water piping can seep through these damaged areas and cause stains and even softening of nearby walls and floors. As with the kitchen, check the sinks and pipes leakage or damages to the waterlines. Clogging of sinks and toilets should also be periodically check to ensure that these would not be potential causes of water damage inside the homes. It is also a good idea to check at the water tanks of your toilets, can check at the rubber or plastic parts as these could have eroded or corroded in the time that the toilet has been in use. Another area to check for potential sources of the basement, utility room or laundry room. Check the washing machine. Check at the hoses for drips and damage to the water hose, such as bulging, fraying and even cracking. For preventive maintenance you can also change the water hose every 3-5 years to prevent water damage that can occur from leaks from destroyed hoses. Water heaters found in these areas of the homes are also possible culprits. Leaks, rusting are causes of concern regarding water damage and should be looked into by a professional as soon as possible. Most water heaters last 8-15 years, and should be replaced when they have reached their lifespan limit. These should also be installed next to a floor drain or inside a drain pan to prevent water damage to the floor and to nearby furnishings. PREVENTING WATER DAMAGE OUTDOORS The first place to check to prevent damage occurring is the roof. Roofs have the purpose of keeping the home dry, and it should be regularly checked to ensure that it continues to keep the home dry. Clean the roof periodically. Remove twigs, leaves, branches and other items that might have accumulated in the roof. Clean the gutters, to ensure that water drains properly. Check all roof vents and soffits. Make sure that air flows freely to reduce buildup of heat and moisture in the roof. Check for destroyed or missing shingles, and replace them immediately. Check the attic for roof leaks, especially if the ceiling starts to develop a water stain, which is an obvious sign of water damage.

  3. These steps to take are just a small step that you can do as a homeowner to prevent water damage from happening in the home. It is better to periodically do this to catch small leaks and problems when they happen and fix them quickly and sometimes even cheaply, rather than wait for water damage to happen inside the home, and go through the process of water damage restoration, which is a tedious, costly and even impossible choice for irreparable damages.
