He raised an army to drive the Danes out of the South of England. He then made an agreement with the Danes that they could live in a certain part of England. This area was called the Danelaw. This was the area controlled by the Vikings. The green areas were controlled by the Anglo-Saxons. This was the situation after the agreement that was made between the Danes and King Alfred.
