  1. Web Based Learning Objects Public Producer Case Task 1 Submitted by Sue Ladd EDTEC 448 November 2007

  2. Definition: • Learning Objects • Are an element of computer-based instruction • Are an entity that can be reused in multiple contexts • Can be accessed/used by many people simultaneously • Can be collaborated upon • Can be updated, new versions made available upon creation (Wiley, Page 3)

  3. Learning Objects • Types: • Fundamental • Combined-open • Combined-closed • Generative-presentation • Generative-instructional (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  4. Learning Objects • Types: Definition and Examples • Fundamental a single, simple element for exhibit or display Example ~ a picture of a computer chip (The link below will open a browser window). http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2387397/2/istockphoto_2387397_computer_cpu_chip.jpg (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  5. Learning Objects • Types: Definition and Examples • Combined-closed An animated image or video with sound Example ~ video demonstrating casting on for knitting (The link below will open a browser window). http://www.knittinghelp.com/apps/flash/video_player/play/34/1 (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  6. Learning Objects • Types: Definition and Examples • Combined-open A web page that combines graphics with sound, text and other choices Example ~ Knitting Instruction site (The link below will open a browser window). http://www.knittinghelp.com/ (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  7. Learning Objects Types: Definition and Examples Generative-presentation A series of linked web pages that provides active learning choices for the student and can be used over and over again with in the same context Example ~ Star Fall site (The link below will open a browser window). http://www.starfall.com/ (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  8. Learning Objects Types: Definition and Examples Generative-instructional Web pages that cause a student to interact in a way that encourages more than simple response, but also changes the learner. Sites can be used in different contexts. Examples ~ Mastermind ~ The Frog Game (The links below will open a browser window). http://www.javaonthebrain.com/java/mastermind/ http://www.hellam.net/maths2000/frogs.html (Wiley, Page 22-27)

  9. Web Based Instruction (WBI) • Uses hypermedia instruction • Uses the World Wide Web • Is meaningful • Fosters and supports learning • Is comprised of components and features Koszalka

  10. Web Based Instruction (WBI) Comprised of features and components Koszalka

  11. Web Based Instruction (WBI) • Features • Communication • Community • Interactivity • Open system • Globally Accessible • Components • Content • Multimedia • Tools • Connections • Providers • Programs • Applications Koszalka

  12. Web Based Instruction (WBI) Usable-Worth the Effort-Desired The Web is used to create meaningful learning environments where learning is fostered and supported. Design principles are followed with the goal to fulfill student and teacher needs. Web Enhanced Instruction Classroom activities are supplemented with computer technology and the use of the Web to increase collaboration and interactivity. Koszalka

  13. Information A process, a flow of messages with many functions which may include instruction to aid learning External, Content Grabowski and Small

  14. Instruction Information which has been selected, organized and sequenced with the intent that the consumer will act upon it at some time External, Deliberate Grabowski and Small

  15. Learning Actual, active processing of information which is personally defined and driven by the user/student. Some kind of measurable or observable change takes place. Internal Grabowski and Small

  16. What does this mean for me as an Educator? I can set the stage for learning to take place, but I can’t guarantee that my target learners will internalize the learning objectives as I intended. I need to set up learning situations that customers seek out, are usable, and feel are worthwhile so that they will return to reuse my materials or recommend them to others. I need to perform assessments that allow me to change my instructions if my customers do not feel the learning situations I provide are worthwhile. I need to consider design elements when creating Web based learning objects to insure the creation of quality products that will promote learning and make use of the web as it was intended, not simply presentation of information.
