Research papers are usually written to fulfill an academic requirement, in which the students have to create an extensive written document which is developed after elaborated individual research. The research starts with choosing a topic and ends with in-depth findings and a description on that particular topic.
There is no standard style of writing a paper, it can be written as a debatable paper, while there are research papers which are diagnostic or analytical in nature. Students can choose topics which can be compared or contrasted while there are other papers which present causes and effects. Some of the papers discuss reports while others are explanatory type. Word count requirements are sometimes mentioned by the instructor, however, it is suggested that research papers should ideally have a count of 2,500 to 3,000 words. Headings, titles and other formatting tools are all inclusive of the word count as the plain text so writers should make additions accordingly. Length should suggestively fit in a six to seven pages, so that the teacher or professor does not lose interest only by looking at the stretch of paper.
These are the basic requisites for writing research papers, however, students are supposed to start systematically about how they should go stepwise with their papers. The research paper starts with choosing a topic which motivates or enthuses the student. Then information in forms of articles, books, previous research papers, theses, written material and various academic documents.
After going through the reading material researchers are provided to make a tentative outline of their work. The outline encompasses, how the paper would be carried out stepwise, in terms of introduction, research statement, background, main body, limitations, scope and conclusion. This is just a summary of the work, students can choose their own framework format.
After creating a tentative outline, students need to collect information for each heading. Organizing the material into notes would help with creating drafts for the final research paper. All the information that is collected under those headings should be checked for accuracy, correctness, precision and students should make sure the information is factual and recent.
When all the data, statistics and other written material is collected under all the titles, the students should prepare a draft to jot down all the collected information. The draft should have room for more data if required. Also, it should not be too short that the writer needs to put unnecessary facts and figures or repeat information to complete the word count. Creating a draft would help students check and re-check the information before finalizing their papers. Furthermore, it will allow students to revise their study and get the material proofread from other sources before presenting it to the instructor.
After revising the outline and draft, students can decide whether the information placed under those titles is sufficient. If the draft is deficient in terms of data to justify the topic, then the further material can be adjusted to complete the final requirements. When all the information has been adjusted, the writer should make final adjustments and make sure it does not exceed the standard length. This impeccable draft can finally be converted to a research paper.
