  1. My project Katarzyna Drogomyrecka

  2. Why volunteering with ESC ? • I decided to join a volunteering project because I wanted to try working abroad and experiencing a different environment after finishing university and working full-time. I wanted to meet people from different countries, discover new cultures, and do something meaningful that could have a positive impact on others. • For me, volunteering was also a chance to grow personally, challenge myself, and learn new skills that I wouldn’t gain by staying in my comfort zone. I believed that helping others while developing myself at the same time was the best motivation to start this journey.

  3. My Host Organization • ProAtlântico is an international non-profit organization. The main responsibilities of ProAtlântico include coordinating international volunteers, providing training and support. The organization also helps participants connect with local communities. To come to Lisbon and work with ProAtantico held me FundacjaRozwojuSpołeczeństwa Przedsiębiorczego.

  4. Work Place – Jesuit refugee service • JRS Portugal started in 1992 and focuses on providing a variety of services to migrant people including social support, psychological support, medical support, legal support, professional integration, Portuguese language courses, and shelter for homeless immigrants.

  5. Reasons why I chose this work ProAtlântico works in many different social and cultural areas, but I chose this specific project because it focuses on supporting migrants. I know from my own experience how difficult it can be to move abroad and to start a new life. Another important reason is my academic background since I graduated in International Relations.

  6. My Duties and responsibilities • Cleaning the outdoor area around the building • Collecting food from the local food bank for the shelter residents • Providing activities, such as yoga for residents • Participating in cultural activities, such as visiting museum and concert

  7. My Duties and responsibilities • Organizing and conducting handicraft workshops • Supporting residents with daily needs and small organizational tasks • Helping during “Storytelling Time” and weekend activities (cooking workshops, games, movies) • Organizing and assisting with cleaning before and after events in our shelter

  8. My own workshop During my work in shelter I suggested an activity such as handcrafting. Together with residents, we made handmade gifts, including a poster, decorations, and bracelet.

  9. Difficulties during work During volunteering, it is normal for challenges to arise, and I was no exception. Personally, I faced some communication difficulties with my supervisor, and there were also cultural differences between me and the residents of the shelter that needed to be considered. Despite these challenges, we were able to find solutions together. Open communication, patience, and understanding helped me to overcome these issues, and ultimately everything worked out well.

  10. Free time As volunteers, we worked about 30–35 hours per week. In addition, we had full weekends off, which gave us the chance to explore Lisbon and its surroundings. During my stay, I visited the Cristo Rei statue a few times, and the coastal town of Ericeira and Sintra city. I also explored several museums and enjoyed walking through Lisbon’s streets, discovering local cafés, viewpoints, and hidden corners of the city. This free time allowed me to experience the culture, history, and vibrant atmosphere of Lisbon while balancing work and personal exploration.

  13. North Portugal – Porto and Braga trip • During my volunteering, I travelled with other volunteers to Porto for two days. We explored the city, visited its historic streets, tried the famous Porto wine, and enjoyed a live performance of traditional Fado music. After Porto, we went to Braga for our on-arrival volunteer training, which was full of useful workshops and activities to prepare us for the project. • We also attended the “Agora EU“ event, where we listened to inspiring speakers and participated in many engaging activities. These experiences helped me learn more about European values, intercultural communication, and teamwork.
