The Importance Of Spaying And Neutering Dogs And Cats

It is not easy for pets to go through surgery, nor is it easy on their owners. A good veterinary practice understands your pet is a part of your family, and you want to give them the best care possible. Successful surgery requires not only an experienced veterinary orthopedic surgeon but also requires compassionate care after surgery and helpful aftercare instructions to ensure the pet makes a full recovery.

  1. The Importance Of Spaying And Neutering Dogs And Cats It is not easy for pets to go through surgery, nor is it easy on their owners. A good veterinary practice understands your pet is a part of your family, and you want to give them the best care possible. Successful surgery requires not only an experienced veterinary orthopedic surgeon but also requires compassionate care after surgery and helpful aftercare instructions to ensure the pet makes a full recovery. There are many reasons why a pet may need surgery. Although pets may need surgery for any number of reasons including an injury or disease, one of the main and most common surgeries performed at any veterinary practice is the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. Owning a pet is extremely rewarding, although it also requires years of responsibility and dedication. Young puppies and kittens especially require time, love, care, and attention to become loyal, loving adults, and many pet owners simply do not have the time to spend with baby animals. Getting your dog or cat spayed or neutered is an easy way to ensure each animal receives the attention it deserves and that you are not overwhelmed by the needs of young animals. If your dog or cat is increasingly aggressive, exhibiting a need to wander, is marking territory indoors, or fighting with other animals, spaying or neutering may also help with these behaviors. Spaying for female animals or neutering for males eliminates the innate need to mate and can make your dog or cat more receptive to training without the instinctual distraction of reproduction. There are so many unwanted kittens and puppies in the world that unregistered breeding is just contributing to the problem. Although puppies and kittens are very cute, it is not advisable to breed if you are not a registered breeder that has done your research on your chosen breed and that has the necessary qualifications, skill, and knowledge to breed responsibly and find homes for all the puppies or kittens that may result from the litters. There are increasing numbers of dogs and cats being euthanized all over the United States as a result of irresponsible breeding. It is in your and your pet’s best interest to have them either spayed or neutered. This is because it dramatically improves their health, but will also mean that you won’t have to worry about your dog or cat accidentally reproducing. Cats that are not spayed or neutered cannot be allowed to leave the house or roam or it will result in unwanted litters as there are so many stray cats wandering about. If your dog is not spayed or neutered, they may encounter other dogs on their walks and even if they’re on a lead, an accidental covering may occur. It is safer to spay and neuter your pets and will give you more peace of mind and your pets a lot more freedom to explore and make new friends. Additionally, spaying female dogs before their first heat cycle is especially beneficial, as it greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer, which sadly, is the most prevalent cancer of older female dogs. Even worse, half of the female dogs diagnosed with mammary cancer die from the unforgiving, yet preventable disease. In addition, spaying or neutering early in your cat or dog’s life allows them to heal faster and prevent accidental litters. Neutering male dogs and cats drastically reduces the risk of prostate cancer, which is incredibly beneficial in the long run and will mean that your dog lives a longer, healthier life. Both surgeries are relatively easy, fast, and extremely safe for animals as young as four months old.
