  2. Criticism • The act of evaluating and judging • Provides the possibility of improvement • Different types of criticism depend on the field of study and the audience

  3. Avant Garde Art • Developed in France in late 19th century • Started in the theater as a form of cabaret • Expanded to incorporate all forms of expression • Can loosely be defined as being “anti”

  4. Attacking Modernism • Avant garde critiques the institution of art • Seeks new forms outside of tradition • Attempts to provoke the viewer

  5. Appropriation • After WWII the historical Avant Garde (Futurism, Dada, Surrealism) became popular • Once against the institution, it was now becoming institutionalized • Culture appropriates itself continually
