  1. Transiting Extrasolar Planets Observations of the planets HD 209458b and TrES-1b using the NFO webscope Presentation by Rozmin Daya Work by Rozmin Daya and Dr. Lacy

  2. Background • Extrasolar planets can be detected via the transit technique. • This can give information about: the planet’s orbital period, radius, mass, density, and distance from it’s parent star.

  3. Goals of Project • Test the limits of the NFO telescope. • Improve on the known orbital elements for HD 209458b and TrES-1b.

  4. Project Description • Transits of the planets will be photographed. • The images will be measured using the program Measure. • Light curves for the stars will be constructed using Measure. • The light curves will be analyzed using the program EBOP. • This will yield orbital information for the planets.

  5. The NFO Telescope • Located in Silver City, NM • Robotic • Uses a 24” Cassegrain reflector and a 2k by 2k CCD camera on the back end • Can observe using B, V and R filter. • Processing: [raw – bias – (dark * exposure / 120)] * 10,000 / flat

  6. Measuring the Images • View images • Select a pattern • Measure the series • View the light curve the program has constructed

  7. The Good Stuff • A series of images was obtained 07-15-2005 UT for HD 209458 • Graphs were constructed for each color • The transit was from 6:07 UT to 9:07 UT • We photographed from 6:46 UT to 8:16 UT

  11. Conclusion • The NFO telescope can observe the transits of extrasolar planets. Future Work • TrES-1b • Continued observation of HD 209458b
