  1. Putting the Jigsaw Together James Catmur – Arthur D. Little

  2. Intelligent Journeys – Welcome • Welcome to 2nd Arthur D. Little and Cambridge Consultant Intelligent Journey workshop – ‘Putting the jigsaw together’ • Introductions • Facilities • Get involved • Have fun!

  3. Intelligent Journeys – Welcome • Timing • 08:45 Formal welcome • 09:00 Session one: ‘Managing the jigsaw without the full picture’ • 10:15 Break • 10:30 Session one continued • 12:00 Lunch • 13:00 Session two: ‘Is technology ready to piece together the puzzle?’ • 14:15 Break • 14:30 Session two continued • 16:00 Summary • 16:30 Close

  4. Intelligent Journeys The intelligent journey is about the door to door trip, not just the highway itself

  5. Intelligent Journeys – The Situation • Things have moved forward on the intelligent journey debate • Government announced road-user charging • EU propose mandatory accident notification systems • The US standards for car-to-car communication • But policy will still need to tackle difficult issues • safer and more productive at the same time • wider public safety • congestion • integration of transport modes • environmental concerns

  6. Intelligent Journeys – The Situation • The seminar will consider how these issues may best be addressed • The opportunities for stakeholders • Further policy developments • Further technology developments • After the workshop, we will develop a summary of the day’s discussions

  7. Intelligent Journeys – The Situation • The diversity of the stakeholders and new technologies complicates the development of the intelligent journey • Intelligent journeys require the involvement of a variety of stakeholders with different objectives • A complex system must be put in place and an ecosystem must develop • Experience from the Telematics hype is rather negative and industrial players are rather cautious

  8. Intelligent Journeys – The Question How to turn the intelligent journey into a reality and a success for all stakeholders ‘Putting the Jigsaw Together’

  9. Intelligent Journeys – The Two Sessions Key issues to be discussed • Players’ common objectives and conflicts • Possible eco-systems • Government’s role Managing the jigsaw without the full picture • Does one size fit all? • 802.11p: a bridge too far? • Galileo: rocket science? • Road-side equipment? • Video game versus zimmer-frame? Is technology ready to piece together the puzzle? What can we learn from Telematics’ problems

  10. Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture Michael Natusch – Arthur D. Little

  11. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture There are numerous stakeholders involved and they have different objectives and potential roles Government OEMs 1st tier suppliers Traditional "TIME"-Companies … Specialised electronics provideers (HW/SW/Services)

  12. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture There could be a number of ways they might work together – the ‘intelligent journey ecosystem’ Value Chain Software Content & Service Provision Hardware Access Infrastructure Value Chain Infrastructure Providing Application Developing Content Creation and Aggregation Product/Service Provisioning Access Devices Manufacturing Delivery/End user • Operate network • Provide infrastructure for telematic data trans-port • Provide applications and solutions to access digital content/service over Telematic devices • Produce & aggregate content • Structure content to fit customer requirements • Manage content rights • Provide product/service to end-users • Billing of product/services • Produce telematic devices: • in-vehicle electronics • service specific access devices • Consume telematic content/services through in-vehicle and other Telematic devices Value Adding Steps Source: ADL Global Telematics Survey 2005

  13. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture We can learn from the Telematics hype and relative failure so far • Causes of optimistic expectations? • Hurdles to a wider adoption? • Expectations too high or services not correctly introduced? Telematics as automotives' answer to TelCo Boom First systems like ITGS or Tegarion started Low customer acceptance of initial services Service prospects down after decline of e-biz Telematics major cost factor for many OEM's 1996 1998 2000 2002 2004 2006 Source: ADL Global Telematics Survey 2005

  14. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture • Session One

  15. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture We would like the two groups to think about the following issues

  16. Intelligent Journeys – The Key Issues – Telematics There are three outputs we would like you to work towards

  17. Intelligent Journeys – Managing the Jigsaw without the Full Picture Two groups will work in parallel then come together to discuss their conclusions • Both groups will focus on the same three areas • We would like you to: • Consider the questions we have raised • Document your conclusions • Present these back to the group • Engage in wider debate • Consider expected output from your working session Break out sessions
