5. Going Green – Our Journey Growing up we had little direction and guidance on how to live sustainable lifestyles. Going Green meant getting sick or something the tree-huggers did in Boulder.  The typical guidance we received from our parents had more to do with wasting money than saving the earth.  I can hear the voices still “Are we leaving the windows open to heat the entire neighborhood” or “I know those lights, that aren’t being used, didn’t turn themselves on”.  These were the same words of wisdom we received from our parents who used to wash their car and leave the garden hose running, throw cigarette buts out the window of their cars and who “cleaned” the house by bombarding it with the strongest chemicals money could buy. We started on this journey to live greener for one simple reason, it is the right thing to do.  We owe it to ourselves, our kids, future generations and our fellow earth habitants to do what is right.  By no stretch of the imagination are we perfect and are working and learning every day how to balance convenience and sustainability.  Like many things in life, creating positive habits is the key to success.
