DESCRIPTION

Ever wonder how companies protect assets and stay compliant? Effective internal controls are key, and the COSO Framework sits at the center. Developed by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission, COSO is the gold standard for designing and maintaining internal controls. It helps businesses operate efficiently, report accurately, and meet regulations. By using COSO, organizations can ensure their controls match their risks, enabling audits, management, and boards to assess and strengthen governance.

  1. THE FIVE PILLARS OF THE COSO FRAMEWORK The COSO framework is built on five interrelated components, which collectively create a strong internal control system: Control Environment: The foundation of the internal control system, encompassing the integrity, ethical values, and competence of employees. It establishes the “tone at the top” and sets the groundwork for all other control components. Risk Assessment: Organizations must identify and evaluate risks that could hinder them from achieving their objectives. This is done using tools like risk assessment matrices and other methods to understand potential threats and opportunities. Control Activities:These are the policies and procedures that ensure management’s directives are carried out. Approvals, authorizations, verifications, and segregation of duties are key elements of effective control activities. Information and Communication: information must be identified, captured, and communicated across the organization to enable informed decision-making and effective control Monitoring Activities:Ongoing evaluations, often performed by internal audit teams, to assess the effectiveness of internal controls over time and ensure they continue to operate as intended.
