  1. Open Learning Part-time Primary PGCE Aims of the seminar: • To present an overview of the course; • To begin to explore the concept of open learning; • To identify how the course is supported by learning technologies; • To demonstrate how trainee teachers might develop through use of learning technologies.

  2. Overview of the Course Academic  Linked to ITTNC (DfES 02) – core and foundation subjects, Foundation Stage areas of learning, ICT, and Professional Issues (including child development). Home and school based study tasks within the four themes: • Learners & learning; • Teachers and teaching; • The content of teaching and learning; • The monitoring, assessment, recording, reporting and accountability (MARRA) of teaching and learning.

  3. School Experience Although the course runs over 5 terms, school experience is seen as having three phases: • Term 1 • Partnership placement 1 • Partnership placement 2

  4. Term 1 Trainee arranged school: • Serial practice – 10 days. School tasks working within class teachers’ planning, possibly in more than one classroom across the age phase. There are no formal observations during term 1.

  5. Partnership Placement 1Terms 2 & 3 Institute of Education arranged school: • Serial practice – 20 days. Working with groups on school tasks (pairs to whole class) for focused periods of time, e.g. literacy plenary session; group of 6 within the daily maths lesson. Three formal observations. (School and Institute).

  6. Partnership Placement 1Terms 2 & 3 Staying in the same school: Block practice – 4 weeks. Moving towards working with whole class responsibility by beginning of week 3. Four formal observations. (School and Institute)

  7. Partnership Placement 2Terms 4 & 5 Institute of Education arranged school: Specialism serial practice – 15 days. Working within specialism tasks. Two or three formal observations (School and Institute).

  8. Partnership Placement 2Terms 4 & 5 Staying in the same school: Final block practice – 6 weeks. Trainee takes responsibility for class by beginning of week 2. At least five formal observations (School and Institute). Final assessment against standards for practical teaching.

  9. Formative (all terms): · Study tasks for all academic areas · Formative assignment · Draft assignments · School Experience formative assessments Summative (Term 5): · Presentation of specialism (Term 4) · Assignments in English, mathematics, science and professional issues (Term 5) · Profile of final block School Experience · Completion of the first part of the Career Entry and Development Profile Assessment
