Devi-Durga

The Durga Suktam is a powerful hymn sung by the Gods to the supreme feminine aspect of Godhead - Goddess Durga. Those who sing or read these sacred verses of the Devi Suktam shall always have the blessings and protection of the Divine all-pervading energy of the cosmos in the form of Mother Durga. If one analyses the meaning behind each verse, it is sufficient to bring enlightenment in an instance or in the least cause the flower of gratitude to blossom within ones heart.

  2. Who is Devi Durga? Mother Durga is none other than the very manefestation of Adi Shakti. In this manefestation, she appears seated on the lion and as such is also known as Singha Vahini. Most commonly though one will come across pictures of her seated on a tiger. In this case she is called Sherawali, and a beautiful epic narration exist to accompany this Sherawali lila of the divine Mother. This narration will be provided under the respective Goddesses name.

  3. More About Durga Mata: She looks gracious always with sweet smile on Her lips, Her hands are one thousand in number. Various weapons are in all Her hands. The clothing of the three-eyed one are bright and purified by Fire. She is decorated with ornaments all of jewels. All the women who are the jewels are sprung from Her parts and parts of parts and by the power of Her Maya, all the people of the world are enchanted.

  4. Devi Maa Durga is originally described as being a thousand armed. But for our limited human understanding later personified with eight arms wielding various symbols and weapons. These are: Shankh or celestial conch Chakra Sudarshan Gada or Mace Trishul Sword Lotus Bow and Arrow Fear not Mudra

  5. Brief About Durga Mata’s Weapons: Shankh or celestial conch:- Representing that from which the prana of life and the OMKAR sound emanates. Chakra Sudarshan:- The revolving disc of time showing that time destroys all things but with inner awakening one goes beyond time. Gada or Mace:- A symbol of victory and vairagya or control over the senses. Trishul:- The three points represents the past, the present and the future. She who is beyond Time. The centre spike represents the atma (soul) which should ever remain above the past and the future, since the past is gone and the future is unsure to become real. Therefore live with awareness every moment so that you would have lived every moment of your life.

  6. 5. Sword:- The sword represents the cosmic intelligence (personified as Lord Ganesh). It beckons that man must use his knowledge, sharpening his intellect so that he may cut asunder the illusion that binds the soul and prevents him from experiencing true bliss. 6. Lotus:- Represents beauty and prosperity. But moreover like the lotus plant which is rooted in the muddy waters, uplifts itself to rise above those turbulent waters to blossom and spread fragrance and beauty. So too man must work steadfastly to rise above his lower nature and then he will truly blossom in the material, spiritual and cosmic dimensions.

  7. 7. Bow and Arrow:- Likened to the arrow, we must be steadfast and focussed on our divine aim and aspiration. Never being deterred from that fixed target, so that we can realise our divine goal. 6. Fear not Mudra:- The Mudra of the raised hand in the gesture of Fear Not. Devi is saying remember me again and again and "Fear Not" success will be yours.
