  2. Welcome to UNC! • UNC first chartered in 1789; opened in January 1795 • Graduate education began in 1876 • 8,000 graduate students, 2,300 professional students, 17,500 undergraduates • 107 master’s, 74 doctorate and 4 professional degree programs currently offered

  3. Student Activities • 616 student groups on campus • GPSF – provide Travel Grants, University Research Day, social events, volunteer events, appropriations to departments • LGBTQ Center in SASB North; lgtbq@unc.edu; Terry Phoenix – Director • Diversity events through Graduate School – Alan Kendrick • Women’s Center – women’s issues, parenting/child care needs

  4. Athletic Events • All campus sporting events are free! (paid for by enormous student fees) • Most games simply require a student ID to attend • Some football and all basketball games require registration through on-line lottery; see www.unc.edu/caa • Spouses can attend games at a reduced rate (policy currently undergoing changes)

  5. Recreation Centers • Two rec center locations: Student Rec Center on South Rd. and Ram’s Head • Basketball courts, cardio and weight equipment, indoor track, climbing wall, classes • Fetzer Gym: basketball, fencing, wrestling, squash, racquetball, climbing wall • Fields and courts available around campus • Indoor and outdoor pools • Outdoor Education Division: Challenge course and expeditions throughout NC • campusrec.unc.edu

  6. Intramurals/Club Sports • Lots of IMs offered: flag football, soccer, softball, disc golf, kickball, sports trivia, Baggo (AKA cornhole), Texas Hold’em • Men, women, and co-rec teams available • Over 50 active sports clubs • Attend Fall Fest on August 17 or Sport Club Membership Drive to join • campusrec.unc.edu

  7. Transportation • Chapel Hill buses are free! • www.townofchapelhill.org • Park and Ride permits available through UNC Department of Public Safety • Point 2 Point available after hours on campus • Emergency and disability services available • Triangle Transit Authority is free to students • Zipcar, biking are good options in Chapel Hill/Carrboro; biking/pedestrian maps available • About 700 parking permits for GS available on-campus through lottery (register in April/May)

  8. Welcome to the Triangle! • The “Triangle” is formed by Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh • Population of about 1.4 million people in the eight county area • The “Triad” is formed by Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point

  9. Housing • Student Family Housing (Baity Hill) – available if students are married or have a child; apartment-style and located on campus • Odum Village – apartment style housing on campus for unmarried graduate students • See GPSF website for roommate forum and off-campus housing guide

  10. DMV/Voter Registration • DMVs located in Carrboro, Hillsborough, Durham, Raleigh, Cary, etc. • Vehicle registration office located in Chapel Hill, Durham, etc. • License transfer includes written test, signs test, eye exam • Motor Voter – register to vote with new license • Campus/city libraries, departments, county board of elections by mail for voter registration (by October 10) • One-stop voting October 16-November 1

Places to Eat • Carolina Dining Services has multiple location on campus • Franklin Street • Tarheel Takeout for Chapel Hill delivery • Chapel Hill Visitor’s Bureau web site • Triangle.com; triangle.citysearch.com • Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mediteranean, Mexican, Italian, Thai, BBQ, variety of options in Chapel Hill

  12. Places to Shop • Franklin Street, Streets at Southpoint Mall, University Mall • Farmer’s markets, Weaver Street Market (co-op), Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Fresh Market (new), Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Kroger
