  8. Tertiary Level Packaging

  9. TERTIARY LEVEL PACKING • With effect from 1st October, 2011 • One or more primary or secondary levels of packaging • Homogeneous or Heterogeneous packages • GS1-128 barcode symbology (1D) encoding: • - Global trade item number (GTIN) • - Expiry date • - Batch number of the product • - Serialized shipping container code number (SSCC)

  10. TERTIARY LEVEL PACKAGING • DGFT requirement: Two separate linear barcodes on the label as per details below: • The first barcode includes the following: • Product Identification (unique GTIN shipper pack) using Application Identifier (01) • Expiry Date in YYMMDD format using Application Identifier (17) • Batch / Lot Number using Application Identifier (10) • The Second Barcode includes: • SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) to identify individual carton uniquely using Application Identifier(00)

  11. TERTIARY LEVEL PACKAGING Homogeneous Packs (same SKU/Product)

  12. TERTIARY LEVEL PACKAGING Heterogeneous Packs (different SKU/Product)

  13. TERTIARY LEVEL PACKAGING Hardware Requirement • Industrial Grade Printer • A scanner (handheld or mounted) for input into • database and rejection • Serialization software and database management • tools.

  14. Secondary Level Packaging

  15. Secondary Level Packaging • With effect from 1st July, 2012 • One or more primary packages in a single item • GS1 – 128 i.e. 1D (or) GS1 Data Matrix i.e. 2D encoding: • Product Identification (unique GTIN shipper pack) using Application Identifier (01). • Expiry Date in YYMMDD format using Application Identifier (17). • Batch / Lot Number using Application Identifier (10) • Serial No. of the secondary package using Application Identifier (21).

  16. Secondary Level Packaging

  17. Secondary Level Packing Hardware Requirement • Online printing on secondary packaging using industrial grade inkjet printer. • Available space on secondary packaging artwork for Data Matrix and human readable data. • Mounted scanner for input into database. • Serialization software and database management tools.

  18. Additional Information • Each packaging level (primary, secondary and tertiary) requires generation of different GTIN for it. • DGFT requirements on barcoding are in addition to existing statutory labeling & marking requirements. • The parentheses (brackets) of AI’s should not be encoded in the barcode and are meant to be represented only in human readable form. • It is mandatory to print data encoded in barcodes as human readable information as well.
