What is knee rehabilitation? • After knee surgery, sometimes it takes a little more effort to get ourselves back on our feet. People try hard to cope with the pain, however, they are not able to get the strength back to push their limits or to get back on the recovery road and that’s when we need a support system through which we get our strength back. That support system is what we call Physical therapy, also known as “Rehab”, which is often what we need when we are not able to get on our feet. It is a part of the program which helps your knee recovers fast. • Rehabilitation helps people by strengthening the weak knee so that it can heal. There are many options a person might choose from. Usually, a rehabilitation center helps a person with exercises along with a few treatments which in turn can help the person’s knee to function normally.
How much time does it take to recover? The time it takes to get the recovery done is different for everyone. This amount of time entirely depends on the individuals, the level of their injuries, and the progress they have made so far with therapy. Where I can get these therapies? These days, many private clinics provide these therapy services. In addition to that, many hospitals and rehab center provides these services too. It really does not matter where you get these services as these centers already have a team of professionals who have a detailed knowledge of the therapy procedure. In these rehabilitation centers, they use different methods to help the weak knee and affected muscle regain its strength. They guide you through the tough phase of pain and encourage you to be healthy and happy.
What to expect from knee rehabilitation? Knee rehabilitation offers a wide range of exercises and treatments for healthy knee recovery. The goal of rehabilitation is to make the patient comfortable with the situation and make them understand the process of swift recovery so that they can become more self-sufficient and prepare themselves for a faster recovery to help them get back to their daily activities. Road to Recovery There are certain hypothetical phases in recovery explained by Physiotherapist in Delhithat can help us understand the progress we have made and what to expect in the future. These phases are defined as sessions with a therapist with respect to recovery in weeks:-
For 1st session, your rehabilitation therapist will examine your knee to understand the condition and progress so far which will help him determine the various types of exercise that suit the best for you. These techniques will help you with all the troubled areas. The only thing your therapist expects from you is to be honest when explaining the challenges that you face which will help him better understand your physical potential and psychological issues. This first session will help you understand and discuss your goals and expectations for your therapy. • For the first three weeks, minimal activities should be allowed such as traveling, or not resting enough. At this time, the patient often prefers a home-based therapy so that they don’t have to travel to a rehabilitation center. Swollen knees after surgery could be uncomfortable and the therapist suggests icing the knee and elevating the knee during this time. By this time, significant pain will eventually fade away. However, aching will still play a part here.
For the fourth and fifth week, the patient will start to feel comfortable and could start driving but short trips only. Patients are advised to avoid long trips. • For recovery of up to six weeks, the patient doesn’t get a good sleep as the swollen knee and aching are still not phased out. There are certain types of braces a patient could wear while sleeping to help support the knee. However, a good night’s sleep eventually comes after some more time. Sometimes, the therapist also suggests some sleeping medication for the patients. Patients are still advised to use ice and elevate. • For six to twelve weeks, the patient will start getting the knee strength back. However, they can notice clicks or clunks which is normal and will be less noticeable over time. By this twelfth week, most patients will be finished with therapy but for better recovery, they still must continue with unsupervised therapy.
What are the home-based exercises? • There are various exercises that can be adopted by a knee surgery patient which could help with the recovery. These exercises could be performed while lying on the bed, sitting on a chair, or standing. Making these exercises, a part of your daily activities indeed helps the patient recover fast. Here is a list of few:- • Ankle Pumps • Heel Slides • Straight Leg Raises • Knee Extension • Gluteal Sets • Knee Bend • After a few days, once the knee will start to get its strength back, the therapist might suggest some other exercises such as cycling or swimming.
When can I return to Normal Activities? • The correct time of returning back to normal activities will depend on your progress. Your therapist could examine your knee and give you a green light for mild daily activities. In addition to that, approximately 6 weeks is when you can get back to your normal chores but of course, after taking permission from your therapist. • Remember, Sports activities could damage the knee and you could lose it as well. The patient should always discuss the activities that they could perform. • In the end, one should remember that the whole journey from surgery to finishing recovery is an important one. And your hard work has helped you a lot to get to the finishing line so that you can again enjoy life and its benefits.
