  1. Export Of Raw Rice Behind Rise In Prices Of Rice In Tiruchi Export Of Raw Rice Behind Rise In Prices Of Rice In Tiruchi In Tiruchi market, the price of rice has seen a sharp increase. While the cost of rice varieties grown primarily in Tamil Nadu’s delta region has moderately increased, those from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are now more costly. Price Of Rice In Karnataka Price Of Rice In Karnataka A kg of RNR variety, also referred to as Karnataka Ponni, was reportedly quoted at ₹52 on Tuesday in the wholesale market, as against ₹46 in January, according to sources. It costs ₹58 in the retail market. Similar to this, the price of common rice varieties (big in size) has increased by ₹2 per kg to ₹48 from ₹46 in the wholesale market. Reasons For The Hike Reasons For The Hike The primary cause of the price increase in the State, according to traders, is the export of raw rice. For the past few years, farmers in the delta region have prioritized growing rice that will be purchased by the State government.

  2. Farmers are said to have been persuaded to start growing paddy that the government has purchased because of its high yield, low overhead, and guaranteed procurement. The popular varieties are cultivated by only 30% of farmers. Because of this, the demand for popular varieties like Ponni is met by the supply from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. Paddy traders from these States prioritized selling Karnataka Ponni and other well-known varieties to fulfill demands in Tamil Nadu until recently. The traders assert that they are now focusing on exporting rice to nations in the Middle East, South Africa, and Europe which has impacted the price in the State. “We find it difficult to source popular paddy varieties from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. We can source paddy from these States only by paying more. Otherwise, the traders prefer to export raw rice. The phenomenon has ultimately contributed to the increase in rice's price. As per M. Sivanandam, president of the Mannachanallur Taluk Rice Mill Owners Association, said that unless the government controls rice exports, price increases are unavoidable. Despite a good harvest in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana last season, prices have risen. The state government should take steps to raise farmer awareness of the importance of cultivating popular varieties rather than common varieties for supply to the public distribution system, he added.
