  2. Alfred George Gardiner (1865-1946) was a British journalist and author. • His essays, written under the pen-name, Alpha of the Plough, are highly regarded. • A.G.Gardiner is one of the most popular Essayist in 20th Century. He wrote a number of Essays and have been contributed in various Newspapers. • All essays contain his reflection on mankind and little happenings of everyday life. The essays are thought provoking and delightful to read. • His uniqueness lay in his ability to teach the basic truths of life in an easy and amusing manner. The Pillars of Society, Pebbles on the Shore, Many Furrows and Leaves in the Wind are some of his well-known writings.

  3. The author observes how a bus conductor makes a lady go up to the uncovered top of a double-decker bus on a freezing evening just because she is carrying a dog. • While watching the incident and its reaction among other passengers, the author wonders whether rules should be tempered with goodwill in order to make them more humane.

  4. Characters • A Lady : • she is traveling in a bus with a little dog. • She loves the dog very much and takes care of it.

  5. Characters • 2. The Bus Conductor : • He is a young man. • Rude and inhuman. • He thinks that the rules must be followed strictly.

  6. Characters: • 3. The Passengers : • The bus is full of passengers who supported the old lady with dog.

  7. Setting It was London city. The time was of night. There was a bus in the story. The atmosphere was very cold. The bus was full of passengers. One passenger was a lady who was with a dog. Carrying a dog in a bus was not allowed, it was a rule. The bus conductor objected.

  8. All About a Dog : Story in Short Two women and a man got up into the bus. One among them, a young lady was dressed in sealskin and carried a Pekinese dog. At this point, the author marked the conductor as a man with vague grievance against everything and particularly against passengers who entered in the bus. May be because he shivered every time when the door was opened.

  9. The conductor pulled the bell. The bus moved forward to its destination. But suddenly the bus was stopped. The conductor saw the lady with a dog. He was disappointed and ordered her to take the dog out or go on the top of bus.

  10. Inspite of this, she refused to obey his order.

  11. Suddenly, the conductor pulled the bell and the bus came to a halt. He told the lady that the bus would not move on until the dog was brought out.

  12. The conductor stepped out of the bus. The passengers were so angry, but he was firm, the law was on his side. He felt as victorious.

  13. The passengers demand their fares back but the conductor refused.

  14. There was an entry of a policeman. The angry passengers complained against the conductor. But the policeman replied to the passengers that the conductor was following the rule. Many passengers left the bus.

  15. The storm rose high inside as all passengers opposed the conductor because of his ill-behaviour to the lady. Everyone stood up in favour of the lady and dog.

  16. The End…. • At last, the lady agreed to go to the top of the bus. The top of the bus had no roof and it was quite hard to sit there in a cold weather with little dog. • Few minutes later, it was struck to work. The bus engine was out of order. The conductor went to help the driver. • In the meantime, the sealskin lady came down. Once the engine was put right. • The conductor came in and saw the lady with the dog. • He pulled the bell again. • The same drama went on until the lady had to get down.

  17. In short…. The rude conductor had nothing to do with the problem faced by the lady and the dog. He behaved in a very rough way, inhuman way.

  18. A.G.Gardiner’s views on the rules: • According to A.G.Gardiner, there are different rules framed for public guidance. Meaning and purpose of rules should be borne in our mind. They are ment to be observed in the sprit but not in letter. • They are meant to be observed in the spirit and not in words. Hence, they should be followed keeping well-being in our mind.
