A Housing Crisis in our City? • There are roughly 48,000 homeless men, women and children in the City of Los Angeles on any given night. • Less than 2% of the homes sold in Los Angeles during the past three months were affordable to median income earners. • 65% of Los Angeles renters cannot afford rent on a 2-bedroom apartment at Fair Market Rent. (An income of $47,560 is needed to afford $1,189/month.) • Many working families live in overcrowded and unsafe buildings which strain infrastructure and contribute to neighborhood blight. • Angelenos who want to own homes are forced to live long distances from their jobs in order to afford homeownership. Longer commutes increase traffic and pollution.

  10. What is Affordable Housing? • What makes housing “affordable” is a healthy ratio of housing cost to household income, generally accepted as 30%. • But 65% of L.A. renters spend more than 50% of their income on rent.

  11. What is Affordable Housing? The Fair Market Rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles is $1189. At current rents, a family earning minimum wage would have to work a 135-hour week to foot the bill for a mean-priced two-bedroom rental.
