How to See Your Counselor • Equal Access • Sign-up at Counselors’ Corner • Be specific on counselor request form • Sign-in and out of counselor’s office • Come without a pass/leave without a pass
Counselors’ Corner • Check often for new information • Provide information about • programs • opportunities • SAT/ACT/PSAT • Visit with counselor • various aspects of high school • learn about your responsibilities
Counselor’s Role • Help students succeed! • Assist with • academics • career exploration • future planning • friends & relationship problems • Teach • problem-solving • good decision-making - both academically and socially • Referrals • From teachers, parents, friends due to concerns • Self-referral
Counselors Can Help • Safety • No harassment policy • Tell an adult (teacher, counselor, assistant principal) if you’re being harassed • Crisis • a life threatening situation • Tell an adult immediately • Confidentiality
Schedule Changes • Second Semester • Schedule changes due to balancing • Be flexible and expect a change • No Elective Changes • Changes can only be made during first 3 weeks of semester • Changes after this time result in an F on the transcript which lowers your GPA and no credit is earned for dropping or adding classes. • Texas State Law mandates 90% attendance • Invalid reasons for schedule changes • Checking out and into classes.
C.F.I.S.D. Schedule Change Policy • Changes can be made during first three weeks of a semester for the following reasons: • The student does not meet prerequisite(s) for the course. • The student does not meet the grade placement requirement for the course. • The student already has credit for the course. • The student is placed in an inappropriate level. • The student has not met the requirements for K-level, AP, Dual Credit, or Horizons placement. • NO ELECTIVE CHANGES AFTER MAY!!!!
K-Level Changes • 3 weeks and 6 weeks • Require teacher/parent approval/notification • D’s and F’s in K level - automatic removal • Again, always check out of previous teacher’s class before checking into new class when changes are made
Registration for Next Year’s Courses • February • counselor’s present new/revised course descriptions • teachers are hired based on students’ registration • parent input is required/recommended • schedules are set by last day of school • April/May • verification of courses given out • all changes or corrections must be done on verification • All Elective changes must be requested by the end of May.
Summer School • April • course information and dates become available • listen to announcements • check for registration information at Counselors’ Corner
Graduation Requirements • Required and Elective Credits • 22 - Minimum • 24 - Recommended • TAKS Tests • Exit Level - 11th Grade; required for graduation • Sophomore TAKS… • February 21 - English/Language Arts TAKS • April 18 - Math TAKS • April 20 - Science TAKS • April 21 – Social Studies TAKS
Texas Grant • State program that gives free money to help with college tuition and fees at Texas public colleges • Requires Recommended or Distinguished High School program • Must demonstrate financial need to receive Texas Grant money
Leadership Development Program • Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (The HOBY) • Choose a HOBY ambassador from Cypress Falls High School • All expense paid weekend leadership seminar in June • Watch for information at Counselors’ Corner!!
College Entrance Exams • THEA - Texas Higher Education Assessment • Must take prior to any collegiate-level courses at public colleges only • ACT, SAT I & II - Measures how well students have developed academic skills that are necessary for college work • New SAT format began in 2005 • Added Algebra II and written composition
PSAT • Tests skills you’ll need for college • This test • assesses your skills in verbal reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and writing • gives you practice for the SAT • is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship • Test Date - October 18th. (Wednesday) • All 10th graders will take the PSAT during school
Transcripts • Permanent academic record • Seen by colleges, employers, the military • What’s on the transcript? • Semester grades • GPA • Class Rank • Attendance • Standardized test scores - TAKS, SAT, ACT
K Level A = 7 B = 6 C = 5 D = 4 F = 0 Regular Level A = 6 B = 5 C = 4 D = 3 F = 0 Grade Points AND G.P.A. A= 100-90 B= 89-80 C= 79-75 D= 74-70 F = 0 • GPA is cumulative by semester • Each year of high school is important • Honor Graduates - Three Levels • Summa Cum Laude - 6.5 GPA or higher • Magna Cum Laude - 6.25 GPA or higher • Cum Laude - 6.0 GPA or higher
Earning Credits • How is Semester Grade calculated? • 1st Six Weeks Grade - added twice • 2nd Six Weeks Grade - added twice • 3rd Six Weeks Grade - added twice • Semester Exam - counts as 1/7 of the semester grade
What Happens if I Fail a Semester? • Year Long Courses: • Failing 1st semester, passing second semester • First and Second semester must average to a 70 or above • Example: 60 + 80 = 70 (you get 1 credit) • Failing 2nd semester, passing first semester • You only earn 1/2 credit • Example: 80 + 60 = 1/2 credit • You must attend summer school or take credit by exam • Credit Plus
Options for Gaining Credit • Summer School • Cost $135 per semester, $270 per one credit • Night School - Windfern High School or Community Colleges • Correspondence • by Texas Tech or UT Austin • You pay for tuition and books • $125 or more per semester • Can only earn 2 credits correspondence course • District Credit By Exam • $30.00 per test • take at Windfern High School • Make-up credit (70)- can test only two times • Original credit (90)- can test one time
Making Better Grades • 90% Attendance • It’s the law! • READ, READ, READ • It improves vocabulary and writing skills • Study • Use advisory time • Tutoring • Attend weekly • 3 week progress report
Academics • Concentrate and learn to be the best student you can be. • Semester Grades are permanent • Make each day count • Learn as much as you can each day • Apply yourself
In Closing • Tenth grade is the year to : • Continue improving grades and study habits • Get involved or continue involvement in clubs and organizations • Continue volunteering or begin volunteering in the community • Continue building a portfolio • Begin researching colleges and universities • Begin setting goals for life after high school
