Il condizionale The conditional is used to express a doubt, a wish or a possibility: •Vorrei un panino al prosciutto. (I would like a ham sandwich.) • Che cosa avremmo dovuto fare? (What should we have done?) The conditional is also used in reported speech.

  1. Il condizionale

  2. The conditional is used to express a doubt, a wish or a possibility:•Vorrei un panino al prosciutto. (I would like a ham sandwich.) • Che cosa avremmo dovuto fare? (What should we have done?)

  3. The conditional is also used in reported speech.

  4. In English, the conditional is used for reported speech with a past tense verb of saying ("She said she would come") andthe future tense is used for reported speech with a present tense verb of saying ("She says she will come").

  5. In Italian, though, the present conditional is used with a present tense verb of saying:Dice che verrebbe. (She says she would come.)

  6. The past conditional is used with a past tense verb of saying:Ha detto che sarebbe venuta. (She said she would have come.)

  7. The present conditional is based on the future stem, and adds identical personal endings to all three conjugations:

  8. FIRST CONJUGATIONparlare to speak future stem: parler io parlerei I would speaktu parleresti lei parlerebbe noi parleremmo voi parlereste loro parlerebbero

  9. SECOND CONJUGATIONvendere (to sell) future stem: vender io venderei tu venderesti lei venderebbe noi venderemmo voi vendereste loro venderebbero

  11. Condizionale passato = conditional of the auxiliary verb +the past participle of the main verb.

  12. Verbs that take avere:io avrei parlato tu avresti parlato lei avrebbe parlato noi avremmo parlato voi avreste parlato loro avrebbero parlato

  13. Verbs that take essere:io sarei arrivato tu saresti arrivato lei sarebbe arrivata noi saremmo arrivati voi sareste arrivati loro sarebbero arrivate
