  2. il condizionale The conditional tense describes: Something that would happen It is called the conditional, because it is just that! The action WOULDhappen under certain conditions. In Italian, there is NO word for WOULD. Soooo, to express the conditional tense (would) you simply need to conjugate verbs with the conditional tense endings. Next Slide: Conditional Tense Endings!!

  3. Il condizionale How to conjugate! *ALL endings are the same.. For ARE, ERE, or IRE verbs!* Know the endings! noi io ____remmo _______rei voi ____reste tu _____resti _____rebbe loro _____rebbero lui/lei

  4. il condizionale How to conjugate! Step 1: Remove the RE ending of the verb parlare dormire vendere Step 2: Add the future endings: ARE verbs Follow the SAME rule as in the Future Tense! Its soooo simple!! (Explanation on the next slide) rei vende vende remmo rei dormi dormi remmo reste vende vende resti reste dormi dormi resti rebbe vende vende rebbero rebbe dormi dormi rebbero

  5. ARE verbs in the Conditional ARE verbs have one extra tiny rule to follow… Step 1: Remove the RE ending of the verb parlare Step 2: CHANGE the A (last letter after ending is removed) to E parl a e Step 3: Add the appropriate Future Endings parle rei parle rebbe parle reste parle resti parle remmo parle rebbero

  6. pratica scritta • Noi _______________________ (parlare) con la prof. • Voi _______________________ (scrivere) una lettera agli studenti italiani. • 3. 7. irregulars in the conditional Yup… there are irregulars!! BUT The irregulars in the conditional tense are the same as in the future! The only difference is that you use the conditional endings! (rei, resti, rebbe, remmo, reste, rebbero) Irregulars on the next slide…

  8. irregular stems in the conditional These are the stems of the irregulars – the endings are the regular conditional endings Andare Vivere Vedere Potere Avere Dovere andr- These stems have a pattern: Remove the two vowels surrounding the R in the ending: Andare = Andr- dar- Dare Fare Stare *Essere Bere Venire Volere berr- vivr- Mini irregulars Just get rid of the E! Double R!! Memorize These!! vedr- far- verr- potr- star- vorr- avr- Really irregular… Just memorize!! dovr- sar-

  10. What about Could & Should? To express “could” and “should” you also use the conditional tense BUT…. To express “could”, you must use the verb… Potere (to be able to / can) (in the conditional – could) …in the conditional tense, Potere is expressed as COULD For example: She could study , if she doesn’t sleep 1. Conjugate potere in the conditional for “She” 2. Add the infinitive “to study” Focus only on the “could study” potrebbe studiare (= she could)

  11. …& should? To express “should”, you must use the verb… dovere (to have to/ must) (in the conditional – should) …in the conditional tense, Dovere is expressed as SHOULD She should study 1. Conjugate dovere in the conditional for “She” 2. Add the infinitive “to study” dovrebbe studiare
