What is UPAF? • The United Performing Arts Fund provides operating support for 34 performing arts groups in Southeastern Wisconsin • UPAF Member Groups provide over 2,000 local performances each year • UPAF Member Groupsreach over 1 million people through educational programming, community outreach and performances • UPAF raises over $9 million annually • 22,500 donors, more than 500 corporations and 170 workplace giving campaigns

  4. Bel Canto announced the creation of its newly formed Boy Choir, the only such group in the Milwaukee area, for boys in fourth grade and older with unchanged voices.

  5. In addition to its regular Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap Program in 40 elementary and middle schools, Danceworks will pilot Mad Hot Ballroom & Tap prom classes in up to 8 Milwaukee high schools to teach ballroom dance and etiquette in preparation for prom this year.

  6. First Stage Children’s Theater’s education programs reach almost 110,000 children each year. First Stage educators spend approximately 2,000 hours annually in southeastern WI classrooms presenting a variety of programs that use theater techniques for curriculum integration in the classroom and broaden the understanding of theater arts.

  7. Offers a one-act, educational touring opera to more than 12,000 students at schools and other venues.

  8. The Milwaukee Ballet School opened a new state-of-the-art dance studio in Brookfield in September 2008 to accommodate for the 40% growth in their two Waukesha county branch locations. The Milwaukee Ballet serves over 30,000 people a year through its community outreach programs including nearly 700 home schooled students.

  9. Milwaukee Chamber Theatre provides broad literary and education programming, including the Young Playwrights Festival, collaboration with university theatre departments, free high school playwriting workshops, student matinees serving the seven-county area and free programs offered to multi-generational audiences.

  10. MCC members come from seven counties, from farm families to dense urban areas, and from more than 150 schools. MCC has 13 different rehearsal sites and five choir levels. MCC teaches through performance and staged 59 choral performances in the 2008-09 Season.

Milwaukee Public Theatre’s touring productions include: • five distinct performances that encourage youth to make healthy choices when making decisions about nutrition, tobacco, touch and sex • seven distinct productions which celebrate cultural diversity and heritage • four distinct healing arts performances for adults inclusive of people with disabilities that address culturally specific health issues and the recovery from everything from sexual abuse to prostate cancer. UNCLOTHED…the naked truth:Survivors’ Stories of Sexual Abuse – a play by local playwright La’Ketta Caldwell that is based on hundreds of interviews with women who have been sexually assaulted. The true stories focus on the ways they have been able to find healing.

The Milwaukee Repertory Theater increased student attendance of their performances by 44% last season by securing additional funding to support their educational programming, but also by adding student matinees and focusing on a new communication strategy for their education department. The Rep toured and performed an original show based on themes from their productions and topical issues for students at 30 MPS schools in 2008-09.

  13. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education (ACE) program is a sequential, multi-year program that integrates the arts into the daily school curriculum. It provides three in-school ensemble presentations per classroom, an evening Family Night concert at each school, a grade-level specific concert, six in-service/workshops for teachers and a parent newsletter. The ACE Program serves nearly 8,000 students half of which come from low-income families.

Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s minority enrollment has quintupled in the last five years as a result of their increased commitment to diversifying its membership, music and audiences and the introduction of half-dozen new programs including the Progressions string program, elementary jazz programming, the Calypso steel drum program and an expansion of their partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs.

  15. Next Act Theatre’s Summer Theatre for Teens program offers multi-cultural teens the opportunity to study free-of-charge with professional artists for six weeks and create an original musical play. The play then tours to give performances and talkbacks in underserved community centers.

  16. Every year, nearly a hundred students from MYSO and Milwaukee Children’s Choir take part in Present Music’s Thanksgiving Concert. Present Music excels in the area of community collaborations, also welcoming the Bucks Native American Singing and Drumming Group and the Milwaukee Choral Artists to their Thanksgiving concert, and working with many different arts groups throughout their season.

Renaissance Theatreworks partnered with Grand Avenue Club (which helps people with mental illness) by providing theater workshops and free tickets to The Dig for members and staff, displaying member artwork in the theater lobby and holding post-show talkbacks led by GAC members and staff in 2009.

In addition to providing free writing and performance in-school programming that reaches 14,000 young people each year, the Skylight Opera Theatre hosts the High School Musical celebration which provides students the chance to perform musical numbers from their school productions at a professional venue (the Broadway Theatre Center).
