  1. Surfing Lingo for Beginners If you’re new to surfing or just never got into the culture’s language, the following is meant for you. It’s important that when you’re representing with all your surf gear, lugging that surfboard bag and all those surf accessories that you fully immerse yourself in the moment to get everything you can out of it without being a kook. Slotted When a surfer is slotted, they are locked into a nice tasty (great) barrel. The wave has created a hollow shape and the surfer is enclosed by it. As in, “That surfer was so slotted on that wave!” Frothing A general term to express excitement whether about good waves or a fresh burrito. “The waves looked so fun, I was absolutely frothing.” Pitted Another great term to express getting barreled. This term rose to fame after a surfer on a Newport beach news report repeatedly said, “So Pitted”. The clip went viral on YouTube and getting pitted has become a classic term. “I just got so pitted!” Kook A surfer who is disrespectful to other surfers or does not know proper surfing etiquette. A kook may drop in on other surfers ruining their waves, or simply be a surfer with too big on an ego. We’re going to prevent any kookiness by laying some fresh vocab to drop when you’re out surfing. “That kook totally burned me on that last wave.”

  2. Grom A grom or grommet is a young surfer usually under 15. It can also express being excited or joyous about something. “Look at that littlegrom ripping!” “It’s so fun out, I feel like a grom surfing here.” Skunked When you go on a surf trip or chase waves, but there are no good waves. “We thought it was going to be epic, but it was flat. We got majorly skunked.” Going Off The opposite of getting skunked. When it is going off, the waves are perfect and you are scoring. “You should have been here yesterday, it was 5 foot and hollow, absolutely going off” Shacked Our third term for getting a sweet barrel. Surfers hunt for barrels, but search harder for words to describe them. This term is inspired by the wave covering you resembling a literal shack you can ride through. “I just got so shacked on last wave.” Critical When a surfer has a tough part of the wave to battle, its referenced as a critical section. Critical is also used as a term to describe quality surfing. “That guy got so critical on that wave!” Or “She really pushed through that critical section.” Novelty Waves A personal favorite term of mine, these are not good waves by traditional standards, but are inordinately fun. This is a blanket term for any funky, fun, unpredictable waves. “It bounces off the cliff and jacks up, total novelty wave.” Credit and thanks to GoBroadReach.com for the info.
