Screen-Time-and-Psychosomatic-Health-A-Critical-Study-of-Future-Learners

The excessive usage of digital devices has raised the issue of the impact of exposure to digital screens on the psychosomatic health of the younger generation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the relationship between screen time and psychosomatic health in future learners. The presentation aids in understanding the screen time on various developments, namely cognitive-emotional and behavioural, and enlightens about the vulnerable risks in the involvement of excessive screen time on psycho-somatic health of children and adolescents.

  1. A Critical Study on Screen Time and Psychosomatic Health of Future Learners This study examines how digital devices impact student health and development. We explore risks, benefits, and strategies for balanced screen use. The goal is to promote healthier tech habits for future learners. by Dr K SUDHAKAR Principal, Vadaranyam College of Education, Tiruvallurdistrict, Tamil Nadu.

  2. Introduction The widespread use of digital devices among children and adolescents has become a ubiquitous feature of modern life. The increasing accessibility and affordability of digital devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, have led to a significant increase in screen time among young people. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children aged 2-18 years old spend no more than 1-2 hours per day on recreational screen time. However, many children and adolescents exceed this recommended limit, with some spending up to 4-6 hours per day on screens. Long term effects are seen on physical-mental health, social interaction and academic achievements of learners due to excessive screen time of users.

  3. The use of digital devices among children and adolescents has increased significantly over the past decade. According to a report by US based Research Center, the percentage of teenagers aged 13-17 years old who own a smartphone increased from 23% in 2011 to 95% in 2021. Similarly, the percentage of children aged 6-12 years old who own a tablet computer increased from 10% in 2011 to 55% in 2021. Time spent on social media, playing games, unnecessary surfing of websites, watching TV continuously are termed as screen time. Ill effects on Psycho-Somatic health, which includes overweight, disturbances in sleep pattern and reduced span of attention are directly linked with excessive screen time.

  4. Defining Key Terms Screen Time Psychosomatic Health Future Learners Duration spent on devices like mobiles and tablets daily. How mental states influence physical health functions. Students aged 8-18 yearspreparing for future academic success.

  5. Potential Positive Impacts of Screen Time Educational Access Online platforms boost test scores by 15% in many cases. Digital Literacy 90% of future jobs require strong tech skills by 2030. Social Connectivity Social media improves feelings of support by 8%. Cognitive Benefits Moderate use enhances problem-solving and multitasking.

  6. Negative Impacts of Excessive Screen Time Psychological Issues Physical Health Risks • Musculoskeletal disorders increased by 41% • Anxiety and depression risk doubles with >3 hours daily • Sleep disruption due to 22% melatonin reduction • Addiction to screens affecting mood and behavior • Eye strain affects 50% of users

  7. Significance of the Study: This study is significant because it provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the relationship between screen time and psychosomatic health in children and adolescents. The study highlights the need for parents, educators, and policymakers to take a proactive approach to reducing screen time and promoting healthy screen use habits among children and adolescents. The study also provides recommendations for future research to explore the long-term effects of screen time on psychosomatic health. Research Questions: What are the effects of screen time on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development in children and adolescents? 2. What are the potential risks and consequences of excessive screen time on psychosomatic health in children and adolescents? 3. What are the implications of these findings for parents, educators, and policymakers?

  8. Methodology This study employed a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to a sample of 150 children and adolescents aged 8-18 years, to gather data on their screen time habits and psychosomatic health. In-depth interviews were also conducted with 50 parents and educators to gather qualitative data on their perceptions of the impact of screen time on psychosomatic health.

  9. Findings • Excessive use of digital media: Nearly 70% of children and adolescents involved in the research stated that they spend more than 2 hours per day on digital media, which exceeds the recommended limit by UNESCO. • Psychosomatic Health Problems: A significant proportion of children and adolescents (50%) reported experiencing psychosomatic health problems, including headaches, eye strain, and sleep disturbances. • Correlation between Screen Time and Psychosomatic Health: The results showed a significant positive correlation between screen time and psychosomatic health problems, indicating that increased screen time is associated with increased risk of psychosomatic health problems.

  10. Strategies for Mitigation and Healthy Screen Use Screen Time Limits Regular Breaks Sleep Hygiene Follow 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. Use blue light filters and set bedtime routines. UNESCO suggests less than 2 hours daily for children. Awareness Educate families on responsible technology use.

  11. Practical Recommendations and Best Practices School Integration Combine digital literacy with wellness programs. Parental Role Model and enforce healthy screen habits at home. Student Responsibility Self-monitor screen use and prioritize physical activity.

  12. Conclusion . In conclusion, this study has provided a comprehensive review on the relationship between screen time and psychosomatic health in children and adolescents. The findings of this study suggest that excessive screen time is associated with a range of negative effects on psychosomatic health, including cognitive delay, emotional disturbances, behavioral problems, sleep disturbances, and physical health problems. Proactive and productive approach towards reducing screen time of the children by encouraging to have healthy media habits to be created among the parent, teachers and policy makers is highlighted through the study undertaken.
