  1. Lesson 1: introduction to recirculating aquatics systems Hydroponics Aquaculture aquaponics

  2. hydroponics • Growing plants in a water/nutrient solution without soil • Takes less: • Labor • Time • Space • Fertilizer

  3. aquaculture • A form of agriculture that involves the propagation, cultivation and marketing of aquatic plants and animals. • Types of systems: • Intensive recirulating • Pond culture • Cage culture • Raceway culture

  4. Aquaponics • The combination of hydroponics and aquaculture in a recirculating system. • Fish waste • Ammonia-nitrite-nitrate • Beneficial bacteria • Is it worth it?

  5. Symbiotic Relationships • A close ecological relationship between 2 or more different species. • Types of relationships: • Mutualism • Commensalism • Parasitism what are some examples?

  6. Compatible species • It is important that the plants and fish you chose to use meet the following: • pH of water • Water temperature • Air temperature

  7. Sustaining life • Fish food • Mechanical equipment • Water pump • Heat pump • Grow light

  8. Selecting your fish! • The following fish are recommended for tanks under 50 gallons: • Cardinal tetra • Pink tailed Australian Rainbow fish • Dwarf austrailian rainbow • Glow light tetra* • Golden pencil fish • White cloud minnow • Zebra fish* • Panda cory

  9. Selecting your fish! • For tanks larger than 50 gallons, the following species of fish can be used: • Tilapia • Bass • Catfish • Crappies • Koi • Fancy goldfish

  10. Aquatic Plants • Adding plants to the aquarium benefit the system both aesthetically and environmentally. • Java moss • Whorled umbrella plant • Hairgrass • Banana plant* • Water primrose • Creeping penny • crystalwort

  11. Garden plant selection • Select plants based on environment. • Houseplants • Ivy • philodendron • Vegetables • Lettuce • herbs • Air plants • epiphytes

  12. Quiz – 5 points each • Where in the world could aquaponics systems be used for food production? • Hydroponics means: • Describe a mutualistic relationship: • What are 2 aquatic plants that benefit a system? • In intensive aquaculture, a tank is stocked densely. True or False. • What are 2 species of fish that should be used in a tank that is larger than 50 gallons? • What are 2 species of fish that should be used in a tank that is smaller than 50 gallons?
