    19. Inside Malindi: Culture Malindi is a town that has a very unique and diverse culture. Every where you look in the society, there are traces of influence from cultures all over the world. On one aspect, you have the rich historical influences of East African heritage. There are a lot of ancient traditions and customs that still exist today in Malindi. As was the case back before the town was even founded, fishing, hunting, and agriculture are still a big part of Malindi's backbone. There are also traces of influence from the Arabs. Much of the society and hierarchy of Malindi was shaped by the Arabs, and their influences are still felt in the area today. There are also roots from Europeans visitors. Though the Portuguese set up shop in Malindi and had great influence in the area, they weren't the only country to assert their dominance. Through Imperialism, many different European nations brought travellers to the area. British, French, and German visitors were among some of those who came to the town and brought their own beliefs and customs. Because of all this mingling, today the town has a very unique culture. The town now relies heavily on its tourism. Much of this tourism is brought on by deep sea fishing and safaris. They are a very big deal in Malindi.

    20. Inside Malindi: History Malindi was founded by Arabs who had arrived in East Africa in the early 13th Century. It is unlikely that a town had existed there before the arrival of the Arabs, and the economy mostly depended on fishing, hunting, and agriculture. Many believe that by the end of the 15th Century Malindi had already reached it's golden age and was beginning to decline. Vasco da Gama reached Malindi on April 15th, 1498, and by this time the town was wealthy and had a prosperous kingdom. Arabs and Africans began to mix cultures and because of this there is a very unique and diverse culture in Malindi that you won't necessarily find anywhere else in the region. By the beginning of the 16th Century, Malindi was chosen by the Portuguese as a supply station for their ships, and because of this the region was built up quite a bit. A lot of Portuguese culture and influences were brought into the region during this time. Fast forward to the 1920's and 1930's, and the area suddenly became known quite well for its good waters for fishing and beautiful scenery. At this time it also became a popular vacation destination for Europeans. From 1945-1968, the population of Malindi increased dramatically. Today, it is primarily a resort community that is known for exceptional deep sea fishing and first class service
