  1. A Seminar onPhase Change Material Presented By Shahid Tavar Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Ram Meghe Institute of Technology & Research

  2. Content • Thermal Energy Storage • Latent Heat Storage • What is PCM ? • Mechanism of Heat Transfer • Classifcation of PCM • Applications

  3. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) • Energy demands vary on daily, weekly and seasonal bases. TES is helpful for balancing between the demand and supply of energy. • Thermal Energy Storage is defined as the temporary holding of the thermal energy in he form of hot or cold substances for further utilisation. Fig. Thermal Energy Storage Types

  4. Latent Heat Storage (LHS) • Latent Heat – Energy released or absorbed by a body during a constant temperature process(During phase transition of a material). • Latent heat Storage relies on phase changes of medium for instance from Solid to Liquid (One phase to another), that use latent Heat to store energy. • Materials used for Latent heat storage are Phase Change Materials.

  5. Phase Change Material • A Phase Change Material (PCM) is a substance with a high heat of fusion which, melts and solidifies at certain temperatures, is capable of storing or releasing large amounts of energy. • It uses chemical bonds to store and releases the heat.

  6. MECHANISM of Heat Transfer Unlike conventional storage materials, when PCM reach the temperature at which it changes phase (their melting point) it absorbs large amount of heat without rise in temperature. When the ambient temperature in the space around the PCM material drops, the PCM solidifies, releasing its stored latent heat.

  8. Applications • PCM has wide range of applications which includes – • Automotive Applications - the use of PCM in air-conditioning systems in cars on the one hand and in temperature management of batteries for electric mobility on the other hand. • Storage in Solar water heating systems • Temperature Control in Buildings
