GPS.... • * “GPS is a constellation of 24 well spaced satellites that orbit the earth and make it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographic location.” • * “The location accuracy is anywhere from 100-10 meters for most equipment. GPS equipment is widely used in science and has now become sufficiently low cost so that almost anyone can own a GPS receiver.” • * The Satellites are spaced so that from any point on earth 24 satellites will be above the horizon. • * On the ground any GPS receiver contains a computer that triangulates its own position by getting bearings from three of the four satellites. The result is provided in the form of a geographic location of longitude and latitude. • * GPS is controlled by the US Department of Defense • * It was originally designed for operation by the US Military

GPS in Logistics Location: determining a basic position * Truck drivers can use GPS to pinpoint the delivery location * Ability to get help if needed knowing exact location Navigation: getting from one location to another * Planning out most efficient delivery route ahead of time to reduce costs pertaining to potential obstacles Tracking: monitoring the movement of people and things * Supervising truck drivers * Monitoring the habits (eating, sleeping, breaks) of truck drivers for statistical analysis and training Mapping: creating maps * Specific routes designed ahead of delivery date Timing: creating precise timing * Tracking drivers’ speeds * Creating databases of precise delivery times for future use

  4. GPS in • The Logistics department at 240Co is linked primarily to the Manufacturing and Engineering R&D departments. Error free precise data from the Logistics department to other departments produces better results in the long run. • GPS also benefits the Sales department in that efficient deliveries can help boost sales. • Purchasing/Warehousing will benefit from the use of GPS at 240Co by efficient monitoring of inventory • The Information Systems department will be involved in the implementation of GPS • In order for GPS to work thoroughly members of the Training department will be responsible for educating staff working with GPS • GPS will improve customer satisfaction. The Customer Service department can give feedback to the logistics department to ensure high quality delivery.

BENEFITS Improves efficiency of deliveries Reduces costs in the long run Multiple benefits for different departments Improve customer satisfaction Provides a way to monitor the drivers Reduce delivery times COSTS Requires a significant investment to implement Can be useless if proper knowledge and training is not provided Drivers may object to constant monitoring (invasion of privacy) GPS will only be used directly by the logistics department GPS Analysis

  6. GPS is what we need to decrease costs and increase speed Even though the investment is high GPS can help us reach the sky So don’t tell us that GPS isn’t worth it, just see how well logistics will work it Say YES to GPS
