  1. Corn Stover Harvesting and Densification Iowa State University Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Tom Tuetken, Research Assistant

  2. Goals and Objectives • To design and build a new corn stover harvest and transport system capable of the following: • Harvest stover at any moisture level while simultaneously harvesting the grain and separating the two streams of materials • Maximize the density of the stover for economical transportation

  3. What’s Out in the Field?

  4. Current Stover Collection Methods • Forage Harvesting • No Separation of Grain • High Grain Damage • Baling • Dirt Collection • Rock Collection • Undesirable Use of Plastic Twine • 2nd Pass Operation

  5. Current Stover Collection • Stakhand • Little Cob Collection • High Dirt Collection • 2nd Pass Operation

  6. Systems Developed • Two-Tier Corn Head • Mounted on Prototype “Bass” Plot Combine • Utilizes Geringhoff Row Units • Corn, Cob,Stalks Separated and Collected

  7. Transport System for Bass Combine • 32 Foot Transport Trailer • 15 Ton Overall Capacity • Able to Press Material to Achieve Higher Density • Towed by 3185 JCB Fastrac • Capable of 45 mph • 4 Wheel Drive With Full Suspension and Brakes

  8. Combined Systems Developed • International Harvester 1460 Axial Flow Combine with Row Bean Head • Collects the Whole Plant • Harvests and Separates Grain From Stover • Stover Conveyed to Hesston Stakhand 10 • Density of Stover Increased • Dirt Free Collection

  9. Alternative Systems Developed • Used with “Stover Caddy” • Collects All Material From Rear of Combine • Uses Forage Blower to Convey Into Wagon • John Deere 9750 STS Combine • 8-Row Corn Head • 6-Row Bean Head

  10. Fall 2001 Initial Test Results • IH 1460 Combine with Hesston Stakhand • Testing Near Biomass Energy Conversion Facility(BECON), Nevada, IA • Stack Density Average of 9.2 lb/ft3 • Corn Yield Average of 186 bu/acre (10788 lb/acre) • Stover Yield Average of 9057 lb/acre

  11. Fall 2001 Initial Test Results • October 29th Field Demonstration in Harlan, Iowa • Equipment Demonstrated: • IH 1460 and Hesston Stakhand • Modified Bass Plot Harvester • John Deere STS 9650 with “Stover Caddy” • Hesston 4 x 3 Giant Square Baler 4910

  12. Harlan Demonstration Results

  13. Conclusions • One-Step Crop Harvesting Possible • Harvest and Separation of Grain and Stover Achieved • Need for Increased Capacity • Grain/Stover Loading Rate Must Be Realized • Densification of Stover • Development of Improved Methods Essential to Get Heavier Loads • Improved Stalk Cut Uniformity Desirable
