  1. Improve Your Wood Surface with General Finishes Wood Stains Wood is prone to rotting if it is used outdoors without being sealed. Not only will rot make wood projects less visually pleasing, but it can also create a hazard of collapse. Rot can develop in a variety of ways, but mold, mildew and termites are a few of the most common culprits. Furthermore, once rot begins, there is no real way to stop the process. Staining wood projects right away and applying re-coats regularly is important to avoiding rot in the first place. The aesthetic appeal of wood often lies in its natural look, so painting is unlikely to be preferred for protection. With stain, the grain of the wood remains visible. Stain is also available in a variety of tints and colors so that customization is still possible. Of course, untinted, uncolored stain can also be used for a completely natural appearance. The benefits of wood stains are numerous and impressive. Compared to paint, stain can be more economical, easier to use and longer-lasting while also letting the natural look of wood shine through. General Finishes Wood Stains are formulated to provide workability similar to oil-based stains, now made with more than 50% renewable resources formulated from sustainable materials that decrease the carbon footprint. They spread easily, can be repaired, blend effortlessly and have plenty of open time. Before applying stain, all raw wood projects require preparation sanding, and all existing finishes require prep cleaning and sanding. If you skip this critical step, your finish may fail. Stir stain to reincorporate solids that have settled to the bottom of the can before and throughout the application process. Thin as desired with distilled water; start with 5%, adding up to 10% by volume. Increase open time, if needed, with up to 5% General Finishes Extender if allowed by local regulations. GF Extender will improve flow and leveling and increase open time, which is helpful in dry climates.

  2. Surface preparation is important. Test your complete finishing process beforehand. Stain color can be affected by variances in wood, room lighting, and deepened with the application of topcoat. Improve your wood surface with General Finishes Wood Dye.
