Hi Everyone! I am Starla Holt, I am a high school English Literature teacher here in Coweta County. I want to inform you about what gifted means to the school system and what we can all do to facilitate and support our young learners to promote learning at the highest levels. We want to foster and ensure that our students are supported at school and at home.
WHAT IS A GIFTED STUDENT? Children who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude or competence in one or more areas, such as intellectual ability, creativity, artistic skill, or leadership. Gifted students often learn more quickly, think more deeply, and handle complex ideas earlier than others their age. Schools sometimes identify gifted students through testing, teacher recommendations, or behavioral observations, and may offer special programs or accommodations to meet their advanced learning needs.
BRIGHT VS GIFTED Gifted students often demonstrate a higher level of intellectual ability and engage in more challenging activities. Bright students are typically above average academically, but may not have the same depth of understanding as gifted students.
HOW IS GIFTED IDENTIFIED IN GEORGIA? Students can be identified through automatic referrals based on standardized test scores or by nomination from teachers, counselors, or parents. Ultimately, eligibility for gifted services is determined based on meeting specific criteria outlined in Georgia Board of Education rules. In Georgia, students are identified for gifted education services based on criteria established by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), as outlined in State Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.38. The identification process involves assessing students in four key areas: mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation. Mental Ability: A score at or above the 99th percentile for grades K–2, or at or above the 96th percentile for grades 3– 12, on a standardized mental ability test. Achievement: A score at or above the 90th percentile on the total reading, total math, or total battery score of a standardized achievement test.
