  1. Some Things To Consider When You Book Your Next Deer Hunting Excursion Most hunting trips come with great excitement before the time. Weeks and months ahead of time the hunter and his/her mates start planning to ensure they touch upon all the important detail. It normally starts with issues such as budget and rates, dates and the perfect destination. For the deer hunter, for example, this means having to do their research in terms of which the ideal destination, facility or hunting lodge is found so that further planning can start. This applies to whether you hunt in Georgia, Virginia or a top-notch lodge in Alabama, for example. Alabama is famed for, among certain qualities, its so-called Black Belt that is ideal for hunting whitetail deer at one of its good lodges such as, say, Westervelt, among choices. The soil is rich, water sources plentiful and the topography ideal for deer to roam freely as perfect examples of free-range herds that hunters prize. Say Alabama is your preferred destination, what would one be looking for in the ideal lodge? For many hunters the first thing that springs to mind is affordability and rates. Whilst it is true that nobody wants to overpay, a word of caution: if you pay very little, do not expect the best quality. So remember that even if some lodges charge more than others, there may well be a reason for that. Also, do remember to think about total cost which includes travel to and from the lodge you choose. A good tip would be to read up as much as you can and see what experiences other hunters have shared. So, you may be paying more for some lodges, but then surely you can expect higher quality, better food and accommodations. Find out about lodges’ ‘no animal no pay’ policies, for example, since absolute success in terms of hunting and killing free-range buck is never guaranteed. Make sure you know every last detail about what you are paying for upfront, so that you are not unpleasantly surprised with additional fees right at the end. Call the lodge(s) beforehand and ask to speak to management for information additional to what you find on their website. Ask for a quote in writing to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises later. Such a call may help you make up your mind. The next thing to consider is the reputation of the outfitter and their guides. If they receive good, positive comment all the time from the public – and also publications in their region – chances are that they may be positively considered. Good lodges, it has to be emphasized, do not build themselves and their reputation overnight. Bear in mand that outstanding lodges build

  2. their name over many decades, by employing good management plans according to proven principles and the best plans. These plans are put in place to ensure that quality buck – and bird flocks for wing-shooters – are given great habitat to live and thrive in, which ultimately benefits both the outfitter, their staff and, of course, the visiting hunter. Of course it starts with natural resources such as access to good water in ponds, dams or rivers, but thereafter the landowner has to ensure the animals have access to good, natural forage, which is often supplemented with food plots for deer, grain fields for game bird and additional information which is collected on an ongoing basis to establish animal movement, also during the time of the year that they tend to move around more than at other times, for example. This is done by keeping records, also when hunters visit. They often play an important part in helping to collect all-important information which will benefit the hunter when they are out in the field. Successful lodges depend on the help of their hunters; they also know that hunters that leave with a positive experience, are likely to refer them to others, and to often return themselves. Establishing yourself as a leading lodge takes work and planning which is, in the end, appreciated by the hunter.
