  1. William “Dummy” Hoy • Held many major league records. One still stands unbroken today. During one game he threw out three base runners at home plate from center field.

  3. Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low • Lost hearing in one ear at age 25 due to treatment for an ear infection. Became fully deaf at the age of 29 when a grain of rice punctured the ear drum of her good ear. • Learned ASL • Founded the Girl Scouts

  4. Ludwig van Beethoven

  5. Ludwig van Beethoven • Music composer who began losing his hearing at the age of 30. Became fully deaf 10 years later. Composed several musical pieces while deaf completely from memory. Beethoven's ninth symphony Ode to Joy

  6. National Theatre of the Deaf

  7. National Theatre of the Deaf • Started in 1966.Uses both hearing and deaf actors. • Based in Connecticut it is a professional theatre group that travels around the world putting on plays in ASL (voice interpreted).

  8. Marlee Matlin

  9. Marlee Matlin • In 1986 won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was not born deaf but became deaf at age 2.

  10. Gallaudet University Protest

  11. In March 1988 the students protested the selection of another hearing president for Gallaudet University. They shut the school down until the Board of Trustees (school board) selected I. King Jordan as Gallaudet University's first deaf president.

  13. Heather Whitestone • In 1995 she became the first deaf woman to win the crown of Miss America. • Growing up she attended speech-only schools (oralism).

  14. CHUCK BAIRD • Deaf artist who incorporated signs into his art work.
