MapServer: Versatile Open Source GIS Technology for Advanced Data Processing

MapServer is an online Geographic Information System developed since 1994 by the University of Minnesota with support from NASA. This open-source middleware processes vector data (including ESRI shapefiles and PostGIS) and raster data (such as TIFF/GeoTIFF) through OGR and GDAL. It offers features like connection to Opendap for numerical data access, quadtree spatial indexing, and extensive customization options for map outputs. MapServer Technology(http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/) • An online Geographic Information System • Since 1994, open source middleware, developped by University of Minnesota with support from NASA • (Map Server) Added values • Process vector data (ESRI shapefiles, PostGIS, ESRI ArcSDE and others via OGR ) • Process raster data (TIFF/GeoTIFF, EPPL7 and others via GDAL) • Connectable to Opendap (now process numerical data and access them on Internet) • Quadtree spatial indexing for shapefiles • Enables inter-operability / inter-activity functionalities • Select the product of interest • Sub-setting capabilities • Overlay capabilities • On-the-fly configuration via URLs • On-the-fly projection • Feature selection by item/value, point, area or another feature • Fully customizable, template driven output, map element automation (scalebar, reference map, and legend) • ‘Mosaic/Puzzle’ presentation so as to take account of the better accuracy per area • Auxillary data • Ports, Rivers, Currents (vector) • Bottom topography, Bathymetry, Climatology (raster) • Argos data (vector)
