  4. The Dilemma • HTML5 allows more tracking opportunities • NY Times says: ,,,the technology uses a process in which large amounts of data can be collected and stored on the user’s hard drive while online

  5. What is an Evercookie? • New JavaScript API that places cookie data in several places within the browser: • Standard cookie cache • Browser history • Images

  6. Evercookie… • Developed by SamyKamkar (developer, security hacker) • Evercookie published as open source software to demonstrate a point

  7. The Dilemma, cont. • Information Week says: Evercookie does this by placing cookie data in several places in the browser, including the standard cookie cache, browser history, even with a specialized image file. [It]…utilizes new data storage features in HTML5.

  8. Evercookie, cont. • System is “self-repairing,” meaning that if you do not delete all areas where EC is hiding, the hidden cookie restores all items you deleted

  9. How Technology Could be Abused • Example: Twitter problem • Users unwittingly sent to porno sites • Will be popular with phishing sites

  10. Issue: Resists Will of the User • If user deletes cookies, then they should disappear • Evercookie explicitly ignores user’s request • Like an uninstall program that not only doesn’t uninstall, it adds new apps
