  1. A Tour of theOAIS Reference Model Brian Lavoie Research Scientist Office of Research OCLC Museum Computer Network Annual Conference September 2002

  2. Roadmap • OAIS is the answer! … what’s the question??? • A whirlwind tour of the OAIS reference model • From conceptualization to implementation …

  3. Before OAIS … • Growing awareness of digital preservation as both an imperative and a challenge • Recognition that digital preservation impacts multiple domains: • Libraries, museums, government agencies, private sector • Yes, lots of domain-specific issues, but also issues that transcend domains … • Shared issues, challenges • Common ground for cross-domain dialog/collaboration

  4. Gathering the Strands … • NASA: Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems • Develop ISO archive standards for long-term storage of digital data • Engage the digital preservation community at large • First step: Develop framework to extend the concepts and issues of digital preservation to as broad a community as possible

  5. Open Archival Information System Reference Model • Open: developed/released in a public forum • Archival Information System: “Organization of people and systems that has accepted the responsibility to preserve information and make it available for a Designated Community” • Reference Model: high-level description of an OAIS’s: • Environment • Functional model • Information model • NOT AN IMPLEMENTATION! • January 2002: APPROVED – ISO standard 14721:2002

  6. OAIS Environment OAIS (Archive) OAIS (Archive) Producer Consumer Designated Community Designated Community Management

  7. Open Archival Information System • Two primary functions: • “Preserve information” • “Make it available for a Designated Community” • Functional Model: six components Ingest Archival Storage Access Data Management Preservation Planning Administration

  8. OAIS Information Model • Information Package: Conceptual structure for information as it moves into, through, and out of the archival system • Digital object and its associated metadata, bound into a single logical package • Three Types: • Submission Information Package (SIP) • Archival Information Package (AIP) • Dissemination Information Package (DIP)

  9. Inside the Archival Information Package … Packaging Information Content Information Preservation Description Information Content Data Object Representation Information Reference Provenance Context Fixity Descriptive Information

  10. Moving Forward … • Repository Architectures: “OAIS-compliant” • OAIS-Related Standards • Domain-Specific Implementations • Preservation Metadata • Encoding and Exchange: (METS)
