  3. Electronic Training Certificates • Began December 2004 • Training database updated weekly • PDF certificates emailed to address on file with IRB • IRB pulls addresses from ORACLE • Non-UAB addresses: Send to irb@uab.edu • No email? Pick up paper certificate in OIRB www.uab.edu/irb

Investigator 101 CD andWebCT course • Hybrid course • Get CD from OIRB • Register for WebCT course WBTIRB100 • Email eteacher@uab.edu, Subject: IRB Registration Request • Blazer ID • First Name • Last Name • Course: IRB Investigator 101 WBTIRB100 • Department/Division • Telephone • E-mail • Take quiz or quizzes • “Save” each answer / “Submit” each quiz • Parts 1 and 2 for initial training • Part 2 only for continuing training • Complete within one academic semester www.uab.edu/irb

New Non-UAB Option: AGREE Genetics Modules (Duke U) • Accessible Genetics Research Ethics Education (AGREE): http://agree.mc.duke.edu • Three modules required • “Ethics and Genetics Research in Populations” • “Ethics in Behavioral Genetics Research” • “Ethical Issues in Research on Gene-Environment Interactions” • To receive credit • Register as described at AGREE web site (URL above) • Complete 3 quizzes and 3 course evaluations • Send to UAB OIRB • AGREE: 3 certificates or 1 transcript showing all 3 modules completed—print web pages • UAB: Verification of Training Completion (www.uab.edu/irb/forms) • Fax: 934-1301 www.uab.edu/irb

  9. The calendar-year system • NIH: IRB training must be updated “annually” • UAB IRB: “annually” = calendar year (Jan.-Dec.) • Examples of training records • 1. OK till 2005 update • Initial training in January 2003 • Continuing training in December 2004 • 2. OK till 2005 update • Initial training in December 2003 • Continuing training in January 2004 • 3. Not OK—IRB may require retroactive training • Initial training in 2003 • Continuing training in 2005 (after January 31) • Changes may be coming . . . Watch the skies!!! www.uab.edu/irb

Q & A • Did you or your PI get an email reminder about 2004 training? • January 31, 2005 is the one-time extended deadline for 2004 training • Check training at web site: Training in Human Subjects Protections  Records (page may be slow at times—”refresh” view) • If your 2004 training is not complete by January 31, you will not be able to engage in human subjects research. www.uab.edu/irb
