  1. Yes or no? WWW.PICTO.CA I’m working part-time during my studies. Am I covered by the CSST? YES • You don’t have to work a minimum number of hours to be insured by the CSST. As soon as you start working, whether part-time during your studies or full-time, and you’re being paid wages by an employer, you are automatically insured by the CSST.

  2. Yes or no? WWW.PICTO.CA I’m doing an unpaid traineeship while studying. Do I have the same rights as the other workers? YES • If you’re doing an unpaid traineeship in an enterprise during your studies, you’re covered and have the same rights as the other workers, except for the right to return to work. You’re regarded as working for the educational institution where you’re studying or for the school board governing that institution.

  3. Yes or no? WWW.PICTO.CA Do I have to be unionized to be covered by the CSST? NO • You don’t have to be unionized to be covered. Once you’re receiving wages from an employer (or if you’re doing a traineeship), you’re automatically insured by the CSST if you have a work-related accident or contract an occupational disease.

  4. Yes or no? WWW.PICTO.CA Am I covered even if my employer hasn’t paid the premiums due to the CSST ? YES • You’re still fully covered by the CSST.

  5. Yes or no? WWW.PICTO.CA Can my employer fire me or punish me because I had a work-related accident? NO • An employer can’t fire you, suspend you, move you or take reprisals against you because you had a work-related accident or because you’ve contracted an occupational disease.

  6. WWW.PICTO.CA What should I do if I think that it’s unsafe to do my job? RIGHT TO REFUSE • Tell your employer about it immediately. • You have the right to refuse to do a task if you believe that it poses a health or safety risk for you or someone else. • In such a case, your employer must correct the situation. • If after speaking to your employer you both still disagree about the danger or the proposed measures, you can request the intervention of an inspector by phoning the CSST. • You must remain available at the work site to carry out any other tasks. You must not abuse this right in order to be protected.

  14. Let’s take action!

  15. Hypothetical situation: Rose’s first day • You own a large tree nursery, it’s early April, and you’ve just hired Rose Larch, age 16. • This is her first job and she is dynamic, autonomous (never asks questions), responsible (can be left in charge of the cash register), short and slim, very willing (never asks for help: she can do it!), sociable and pleasant – the best candidate you interviewed! • Document: Integration sheet

  16. WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

  17. What’s wrong: Cutting and frying potatoes (cont.) What’s wrong: • Jean-Marc is holding the cooking basket wrong. It is too high and tilted toward him. • Although he is being quick, Nicolas is in Eric’s way and putting him in an awkward position while he’s cutting the potatoes. • Eric is using the cutter improperly. • There are knives stuck into the potatoes! • Why is there garbage on the floor?

  18. The secret: proper organization! The bucket of potatoes is near the cutter, the knives are put away near the workspace. Eric sets up the potato, pulls his hand away before cutting and lowers the handle to shoulder-level. Jean-Marc stands with his back straight and uses his arms, not his shoulders to hold the cooking basket, shaking it directly above the deep-fryer. The floor has been cleaned with an industrial grease cleaner and very hot water. Any mess on the floor is cleaned up immediately. Jean-Marc and Eric are probably wearing shoes with non-slip soles.
