4. MEPI Leaders for Democracy Arabic Program (Lebanon) • Description: This Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) project provides for ten weeks of study and professional experience in Lebanon for 15-20 young civic leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa. The project begins with four weeks of academic coursework in Arabic at the American University of Beirut, where fellows focus on the concepts of leadership, democracy, communication, and conflict resolution. Participants also engage in a five- to six-week professional assignment with Lebanese civil society institutions and organizations. • Eligibility: Young professionals between the ages of 22 and 30 may apply. English is not required, but they must speak Arabic fluently and they must have a bachelor’s degree. 5. International Visitor Leadership Program • Description: This program allows young professionals to focus on specialized topics from politics, to business, to volunteerism or the arts on a three-week professional tour of several U.S. cities. 6. Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship • Description: The fellowship provides mid-career professionals from Egypt and other countries with an opportunity to enhance their professional capabilities through participation in specialized, 10-month, non-degree programs developed specifically for small clusters of fellows at selected U.S. universities. To accomplish its objectives, programs include combinations of course work, independent projects, internships, consultations with U.S. faculty or experts, field trips, and special seminars. Under the guidance of a designated faculty advisor or “coordinator,” fellows plan programs that best suit their individual career development needs. • Eligibility: Mid-career professionals in management leadership positions with potential for professional advancement. 12. TechGirls • Description: The TechGirls exchange program aims to inspire girls from the Middle East and North Africa to pursue higher education and careers in technology through hands-on skills development. 13. Youth Leadership Program • Description: The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive, allowing students to develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities. EducationUSA Advising and Opportunity Grants • Description: The EducationUSA Advising Center in Alexandria, Egypt offers information about how to apply for undergraduate and graduate study at colleges and universities in the United States.  It is located at the Roushdy office of Amideast. 15. Leadership in Education and Development Program (LEAD, Egypt) • Description: Each year, two public high school students - one male and one female - from each of the governorates in Egypt are chosen to receive full, undergraduate scholarships to the American University in Cairo.  Supported in Egypt by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the program has awarded scholarships to over 350 Egyptian students.  About 45% of Egyptian LEAD students spend a semester studying at U.S. universities including Harvard University, Portland State University, the State University of New York, James Madison University, the American University, Bard College and the University of Chicago. • Eligibility: High-achieving, low income, recent high school graduates. • Duration of Program: 5 years • Contact e-mail: LEAD@aucegypt.edu • Call for Applications: Winter/Spring

21. Between the Lines: International Writer’s Program for Chaperones • Description: The 16-19-year-old students in the Iowa writing program are escorted to and from the city by adult chaperones who are fluent in both Arabic and English. These chaperones act as Arabic-speaking liaisons between the students and the BTL and IYWS staff. 22. OneBeat International Music Exchange • Description: OneBeatSM encourages cross-cultural understanding by illustrating ways music can be used to foster positive community engagement. TechWomen Program • Description: Bringing the power of global business, technology, and education together, TechWomen pairs women in Silicon Valley with their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa for a professional mentorship and exchange program at leading technology companies. Using innovative technologies, cutting-edge content, and social networking tools, TechWomen fosters and develops the next generation of women leaders in the technology field by providing women and girls with the access and opportunity needed to pursue tech-based careers. FORTUNE/State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Program • Description: FORTUNE Most Powerful Women Summit and the U.S. State Department established the Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership in May 2006. This public-private partnership places talented, emerging women leaders from all over the world in mentoring programs with FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women Leaders. • Eligibility: Emerging self-motivated women leaders in the business and non-profit sectors between the ages of 28 and 43 with a good command of English. Global Women’s Sports Mentorship Program • Description: This program introduces participants to officials, high-level figures in the sports sector, and representatives of sports business associations. Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) • Description: This program allows young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and learn about U.S. society and values while strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities. • Eligibility: FLTA applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree.  Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 213 (CBT) or 550 (paper-based) on the TOEFL.
