  2. If the spinning wrench were tossed into the air instead of slid across a table, what would be the path of its CG? Answer: A parabola, like that of the baseball bat of Figure 10.1. Question 1

  3. If an L-shaped object were tossed into the air, would part of it go higher than its CG? Answer: Yes indeed. This is neatly employed by athletes when they wish to jump over a high bar. See Figure 10.22 in the text. Question 2

  4. Is the center of mass of a body in the same place as its center of gravity? Answer: For most practical purposes, yes. Where they differ is where the gravitational field differs across a body. This is the case for the moon in the earth's gravitational field. The near part of the moon is in a stronger part of the earth's gravitational field than the far part. Question 3 • Hence the moon's center of gravity is closer to the earth than its center of mass. And this results in one side of the moon always facing earth (see the bottom of page 188).
