  2. Mrs. Schultze’s Family!!!

  3. “In light of the hundreds (if not thousands) of things we might do, are we doing what matters?” (Goodwin, 2010, pg. 4)

  4. “In light of the hundreds (if not thousands) of things we might do, are we doing what matters?” (Goodwin, 2010, pg. 4)

  5. What Matters Most: An effective teacher has more influence on a student’s success than any other factor, including a student’s socioeconomic status or circumstances. (Goodwin, 2010, pg. 9)

  6. What Matters Most : (Goodwin, 2010, pg. 9)

  7. (Goodwin, 2010, pg. 12)

  8. Why Cooperative Learning? • Students respect/listen to peers (sometimes more than teacher) • Openness/honesty among students • Speak the same language • Demands individual participation • Opportunity for social interaction – fun! • Develops 21st century skills • Gives Students ownership in CC time! • May give them reasons to try and to STAY in school

  9. Boostup.org- stats to pay attention to!

  10. Using Breakout Rooms • Train the students first: • Home to move in and out of breakout rooms • How to move from one slide to the next • How to use whiteboard tools (including microphone) • How to work in a group • How to get help while in a breakout room • It may take several class periods to train students how to complete group work correctly. Practice using breakout room before involving students

  11. Send out Invites as a “Teaser” Jib Jab- Smile Box- Voki

  12. Using Breakout Rooms • Creating breakout rooms- • Click on TOOLS • “Break Out Rooms” • “CREATE BREAKOUT ROOMS” • Pick how many rooms you need. • Make you you click “don’t move participants” Unless you are wanting to randomly break up the students right then. • Rename the rooms by right clicking *Practice using breakout room before involving students

  13. Learned ‘in the trenches’ • Setting up your rooms will required prep time before the Class Connect session starts so your transitions can run smoothly. • 1. Create and Rename your Break Out rooms: • 2. Upload Main Room Slides • 3. 3 Main ways to load content in Break Out rooms that I find work best. • A. Create from Scratch • You can then JING in copy of what you need on the screen and use edit tools. • B. Load Separate Slides (Good, but can take longer when you have a lot of rooms.) • OR…

  14. Setting up your Rooms • C- Load all your Slides including Break out Rooms Slides to the Main Room. • Then make sure you can see your PAGE EXPLORER- • CTRL and Click and Select slides you want in the 1st room: You will then RIGHT Click over 1 of the selected slides and Click on “Select Pages” and “Copy”- Scroll down your Page Explore and click on your Break Out Room. You can then right click and click “Selected Pages” and “PASTE” . It will ask you if you want to paste it before, after the slide you clicked on or at the end of the section.

  15. Setting up your Rooms • This last way I found to be the very most efficient so I could prep the break out room slides with the lessons they go with. • In addition to that- it helps to know how to do this so when students do group work together and they need to re-order slides or move them to the main room, they have a quick easy way to do that. • NOTE: • Under the TOOLS and White board options you can also COPY a Main room slide to ALL rooms to save time. • If you don’t need the slides in the Main room that you just copy pasted to the Break out room- • Page Explorer- Ctrl and Click the pages you now can delete. • Then just right click again click “selected pages and then “Delete”

  16. Learned ‘in the trenches’ • Procedures teachers should understand or consider before using breakout rooms: • How to move from main room to breakouts: • Click on Name and DRAG and DROP into the room OR have them click on the ‘Main Room” tab. They can then select the room they want. • You can add more break out rooms later when needed. • Move yourself to your breakout room to ‘prep it’. You can add your slides, fix the whiteboard etc. Snap shot, load content etc. -Make sure you have students “follow” you UNTIL you are ready to have them break out. Otherwise they won’t follow you in the main room.

  17. Using Breakout Rooms • Grouping students – or is it a “walk through tour?” • Moving self and students in and out of rooms. Notice the “room 1-1” tab. You can easily move yourself to your different rooms through the participants window at the top. • Making sure students can use whiteboard tools and move from screen to screen while in breakout rooms • Practice with students moving to and frombreak out rooms.

  18. Prep and Practice w. Students • Using mic in breakout rooms • Using chat while in breakout rooms • How students can get help from teacher while in breakout room • Copying breakout room whiteboards to main screen • Re-Ordering Slides • Loading Content Need to Show the Whole Class the Group Work Done?? Go Into the breakout room and right click on the room name. • You will then select “Copy Whiteboard to the Main room” If you have placed a power point slide, you will also have the option to copy the “slides” to the Main room as well. This is an easy way to review what students have placed on the board without having to move everyone back into the rooms when the activity is finished. Again you can also use the Main Rooms TOOLS and WHITEBOARD to copy all break out rooms to the main room at one time with one click.

  19. Things I learned in Trial and Error • Have a Can-Do Attitude – Let’s just give this a try – failure is the first step to success – Everyone has something to add • Combine easier / “fun” activities with more challenging ones • Facilitate success – predict areas where students will need scaffolding • Graphic organizers • Word Walls • Differentiated Learning Opportunities • It’s good to give ‘choices’ sometimes!

  20. How to copy Break Out Rooms Slides back to the Main room CLICK ON TOOLS WHITEBOARD COPY BREAK OUT ROOMS TO MAIN ROOM. (you can also Right Click on the break out room and find the option to copy just that room to the main room ) Under the White board option you can also COPY a Main room slide to ALL rooms to save time. Once you Select this option it will bring up a box Where you can pick and choose Which break out room slides You want copied back to the main room.

  21. Things I learned in Trial and Error • Start small- do a few rooms together and then let them go try on their own. • Model, model, model! (I Do, We Do, You Do) • Make sure the instructions you give are clear (chunked information, writing is appropriate for grade level, use visuals as needed. JING helps a TON with this! • Have something in the Main room to do for a ‘filler’ for student who get done with the walk through’s early before the timer goes off.

  22. How do I group them? • Making Groups • Students choose ABCD (or fruits, or places, etc.)– then create rooms with those names. • Go down roll – First four students to group 1, second four students to group 2, etc. • Group according to abililty • Automatic/Random Assignment through Blackboard • Reviewing Group Work as whole class • Move class through completed screens • Return everyone and all screens to main room • Take class as a group into each room. • Use Student and Group Evaluation Surveys to help them keep on track.

  23. Assign Tasks and Roles • When you use Groups in Breakouts- make sure to Assign Roles • Group Leader • Participation Chairman – makes sure everyone participates • Looking Good Chairman – makes sure slides look good –everything is readable • With younger students- can an LC be helpful with this? Think of it as a volunteer parent that comes in to help with centers 

  24. The “Roles” of Your Group Circle which one you are today Leader- This person will talk on the microphone and will delegate and keep the group on task. They will make sure that all parts of the ‘task’ are complete before we come back to the class. Finally- they will present back in the main room about your group work! Secretary: This person will be the “note taker” of the group. You will need to be sure to write down all important things the group talks about for each question- You will need to listen and be detailed! Time Keeper/ Communicator This person will watch the time for the group so you do not run out of time or spend too long on 1 question. You will also be in charge of asking Mrs. Schultze any questions when needed! Participant/Researcher These people will follow the leader in being an active participant in finding the information and will go to the websites. They will also place what they find in the IM or whiteboard. You may also want to find additional sites or resources to bring to the main room discussion!
