How it’s Made • The violin is made of many pieces of wood chosen to enhance the performance of the instrument • Top is made of spruce • Back & Ribs are made of maple • Neck is made of maple and ebony • All parts are carefully carved and then glued together with special glue • 4 strings, tailpiece, and other various pieces are added after the body is finished
How it’s Played - The violin rests on the left shoulder - It is kept in place by the player’s chin - Left hand fingers notes by pushing down strings on the neck - Right hand plucks with fingers, or bows the strings using the bow
Fun Fact! On May 16, 2006, a London Auction house known as Christie’s sold a violin made by Stradivarius called “The Hammer” for $3,544,000! That is the most anyone has ever paid at a public auction for a musical instrument!

How it’s Made • The viola is made up of many pieces of wood, similar to the violin • Top made of spruce • Back & Ribs made of maple • Neck made of maple and ebony • All parts carved and glued together with special glue • After body is assembled & varnished, 4 strings, bridge, tailpiece, and other small pieces are added.
How it’s Played • Similar to the violin, but heavier with a slightly different shape. • Rests on left shoulder, held in place by player’s chin. • Left hand fingers notes, while right hand plucks or bows the strings with their fingers or bow.
Fun Fact! It is hard to hear the viola when the whole orchestra is playing. (Though, it’d sure be missed if it wasn’t there!)

How it’s Made • Various wood types are used to make the cello in order to enhance performance. • Top is made of spruce • Maple for the back & sides • Neck is made of maple and ebony • All wood pieces are carefully carved, glued together, and varnished before other small parts are added
How it’s Played • The Cello is too big and heavy to rest on a shoulder • Cellists usually sit down to play • The weight of the cello is supported on an endpin that sticks out from the bottom to the floor • Just like the viola and violin, the left hand fingers notes while the right hand plucks or bows the strings
Fun Fact! A cello made in 1707 by MatteoGoffriller of Venice sold at an auction on April 22, 2005 for $620,800. This was a new record for Goffriller’s instruments!
