  2. Stratification • Ranking of entire groups of people that perpetuates unequal rewards and life chances.

  3. Social class • A group of people who share a similar position in society based on wealth and income

  4. Social class • Upper • New rich – not inherited • Middle • Working • Lower (poor)

  5. Cultural capital • Reputations, connections, skills, knowledge, and so on that can be exchanged for economic benefit

  6. Social Mobility • Movement of people from one class level to another • May be downward, upward or lateral

  7. Poverty line • Established by the Federal Gov. • Min amount needed for a family to survive

  8. Feminization of Poverty • Increasing amounts of women in poverty • High numbers of children as well • Juvenilization of poverty

  9. Policy Issues • Welfare (TANF) • Housing • Health
