  2. The actors don’t speak • Mudras (hand and signs) • Rasas (expressions and gestures) • Rhythmic body movement.

  3. Origin • Kathakali literally means story-play. • Krishananattam • Lord Krishna created by the Zamorin of Calicut • the Raja of Kottarakkara’s attraction • Ramanattam • Aattakatha

  4. Make up and Costumes • The important features of kathakali are make up and costumes. First stage Teppu Second stage Chuttikkaran Third stage Uduthukettu • The basic character types are: • Pachcha (Green) • Kathi (knife) • Kari (Black) • Thadi (Beard) • Minukku (Polished)

  5. Pachcha (Green) • The most character type of kathakali. • Pachcha denotes the green color that used to paint the face of the characters. It indicates nobility, divinity and virtue. • Used for gods, kings, virtuous persons who are of exemplary moral character.  • The Heroes like Rama, Nala • Two types of Pachcha

  6. Kathi (Knife) • Complicated • Color’s position

  7. Thaadi (Beard) • This make up is for cruel and evil persons. • It has three types: • Red beard (Chuvanna): for kings, like Baali • White beard (Veluppu): for virtuous, like Hanuman • Black beard (Karutha): cruel persons, like Kali

  8. Kari (black) • vile and evil characters • Color’s position

  9. Minukku (Polished) • This make up is for virtuous characters, women, messengers, carpenters and other supporting actors. • Male minukku characters include sages and female minukku characters are heroines and servants.

  10. Facial expressions • Eye movments The facial expressions of a Kathakali artist are called Navarasas. They are the following: • Fear (Bhayanakam) • Humour (Hasyam) • Pathos (Karunam) • Anger (Roudram) • Disgust (Beebatsam) • Wonder (Adbhutam) • Peace (Shantam) • Valour (Veeram) • Amour (Sringaram

  11. Acting • Kathakali actors get a very strenuous training to master it. • The basic stage: make the body flexible (Kalaripayattu). They don’t speak, they act by using hand signs, facial expression and body movement.
