  1. TOK in the Diploma How will you use it in your course?

  2. Everyone teaches TOK • Many teachers are scared of it because it takes them outside of their expertise areas. • If teachers shy away from it, they effectively teach kids not to take chances. • A strong DP course has a strong TOK program, and draws from the entire school community to promote the course.

  3. What does TOK Aim to Do • To help students draw links between subjects. • “For example, if you get students to draw a scientist an artist, you get…” • Science and art seem quite opposite if you explore them at a simple level, but they start to become more alike as they grow more abstract.

  4. Critical Thinking • Weak TOK courses make students critical for the sake of being critical. Strong TOK courses help kids to develop more complex modes of reasoning. • What seems relatively simple to you is often a revelation for Gr 11 TOK students

  5. How is it assessed ? • One Ten minute oral presentation, conducted over the course of the two years ( Likely that you will soon need to record, so you should begin doing so now.) • One 1600 word Essay. This should invite comment from subject teachers and the wider school community. Kids should have lots of time to reason their responses.

  6. How can you use it in your course • Using quotes activity. • You should incorporate TOK ideas into your planning so that you have a point to extend from in each unit. • TED is an excellent resource- Examples are short (20mins) but relevant to most DP subjects. • Two focus questions that prepare for a ten minute discussion is often a good starting point.

  7. How you can use it in your course-2 • Check through the section on your course in the TOK course companions and then blend those into your course. • Present counter arguments- Pro GM vs Anti GM, the benefits and shortcomings of historical icons, to evaluate the arguments. ( This way, your course is not perceived as being just about facts)

  8. How can you use it in your course -3 • Make big displays that will elicit interest from kids at all ages. • Bring is guest speakers. • Prepare together-Queensland example • Use journals to help kids reflect. • Get parents involved • Resource your library with relevant books and periodicals. • *Always ensure that students prepare their arguments in advance

  9. Things to avoid • Poorly scheduled preparation of presentations and essays. • Turning the course into Oprah. • Isolating TOK into a “specialty zone” • Teaching kids to be unreasonably critical. • Debasing religious and cultural beliefs
